If you’re intimidated by royal icing and you want to quickly make Conversation Heart Cookies for Valentine’s Day, try this easy recipe.
Hello, everyone! It’s me, Lisa – and I can’t wait to share with you my newest Valentine’s Day creation… and a little V-day adventure I went on.
When you can’t find the Valentine’s Day treat you want – you make it yourself… super cute Conversation Heart Cookies!
So, if you know me, you’ll know that I am in love with… well, love! February 14 has always been my kinda day: whether I was single or taken. I even talked about how one can treat themselves on Valentine’s Day: because we all deserve it, right?!
So here’s a little story for you:
I am from the land of poutine: Montreal, Quebec. Yep: up in cold, cold Canada, I get to speak both English and French, survive massive snowstorms, and go to the sugar shack every spring. It’s a wonderful place to be (eh?)!
The other day, I was on the hunt for conversation heart candies. I noticed that stores all had their full Valentine’s Day display up, right in front of shop. But, for the life of me, I just couldn’t find conversation heart candies… anywhere!
What was going on?!
Conversation hearts are the epitome of Valentine’s Day. Something must be up!
So, like any millennial, I Googled the possibilities and found this article.
Um, excuse me?!
According to the article, NECCO, the company that produced the classic Valentine’s Day treats went out of business early on in 2018.
What’s a gal to do?! I know in the U.S., companies like Brach’s Candy still produce the convo hearts. But here in Montreal? No where to be found. Any other person would give up – but not me. No way!
So I went ahead and made my own. Ladies and gents, I present to you my Conversation Heart Cookies – the sweetest Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies you’ll ever munch on.
How to make Conversation Heart Cookies
Ingredients & Tools
For the cookies:
- 1 stick butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1.5 cups flour (and extra for rolling)
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 drop red gel food coloring
- 1 drop green gel food coloring
- 1 drop violet gel food coloring
- Heart-shaped cookie cutter
For the buttercream:
- 1/2 stick butter, softened
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- 1 drop red gel food coloring
- Piping bag
Yields: approx. 12 cookies
Beat the Wet Ingredients
In an electric stand mixer, beat together butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla until creamy.
Dry Ingredients
Once your wet ingredients are well-combined, add the remainder of your ingredients (ie.: all the dry ingredients). Mix until cookie dough forms.
Color Time!
Once your dough is formed, separate into 3 even parts. Tint each one with your gel food coloring. Cover individually with plastic wrap and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Keep Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin’
Remove the cookie dough from the fridge. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Sprinkle your working surface with flour. Dust a rolling pin with flour and roll each cookie dough so that it’s about 1/4 of an inch thick. Cut into heart shapes with your cookie cutter.
Place each cookie gently on your lined baking sheet and bake for 7 to 9 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
Sweet Buttercream
As the cookies cool, make your buttercream. Using an electric mixer, beat together butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk on medium and gradually increase to high. Tint with a drop of red gel food coloring and scoop into a piping bag.
Write it Out
Now, for the fun part: write out cute messages on each conversation heart cookie. We used phrases like “DM Me” and “TXT Me” as well as: “2 Cute” and “4 Ever.”
Serve and enjoy!
