These conversation heart cookies are tasty and easy to make Valentine’s Day cookies. Instead of worrying about royal icing, these colorful cookies use a simple buttercream icing for writing "conversation heart" messages.
In an electric stand mixer, beat together butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla until creamy.
Once your wet ingredients are well-combined, add the remainder of your ingredients (ie.: all the dry ingredients).
Mix until cookie dough forms.
Once your dough is formed, separate into 3 even parts.
Tint each part with a gel food coloring.
Cover individually with plastic wrap and let sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Remove the cookie dough from the fridge.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Sprinkle your working surface with flour. Dust a rolling pin with flour and roll each cookie dough so that it’s about 1/4 of an inch thick.
Cut into heart shapes with your cookie cutter.
Place each cookie gently on your lined baking sheet and bake for 7 to 9 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
Make Buttercream Icing
As the cookies cool, make your buttercream. Using an electric mixer, beat together butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk on medium and gradually increase to high.
Tint with a drop of red gel food coloring and scoop into a piping bag.
Use the icing in the piping bag to write cute messages on each cookie. We used phrases like “DM Me” and “TXT Me” as well as: “2 Cute” and “4 Ever.”
