The FURminator

When I first received an offer to take a look at the FURmintor deshedding tool for dogs, I thought, “Well–I have a dog, and she does shed, but I don’t think that I have time to look at and review some sort of doggie comb,” so I never replied.

Later I was looking at my emails, and I decided to look into this product a bit more, so I did what I always do–turned to the amazon community of reviewers–to see what they had to say about the FURminator. I was convinced by the reviews–four and a half to five stars across the board.

Soon I was holding the FURminator in my own hands (as well as some waterless deShedding shampoo and deShedding treats). I liked the feel of it. It was heavy and sturdy in my hands–easy to hold.  With the weather heating up, now was the perfect time to try it.

I called the dog over to a nice shady spot under a tree. Hard to believe that someone as cute as she is can be responsible for so much shedding, isn’t it?

The process was easy, and just as it showed on the package, the hair was coming out without pulling. It was like she was getting a good rub-down. My husband came over, and I said, “Look at this! Look at how much is coming out. It’s so easy.

He laughed at me and accused me of sounding like an informercial.  However, as he sat and watched, he could have earned a starring role as well.  As he was petting her, he observed (with a little excitement in his voice), “She even feels lighter.”

On the package it showed the amount of hair that was removed from one session. I brushed Shadow for about 10 minutes that day, and about 10 minutes the next day, getting out equal amounts of fur each time.  I could have continued brushing her if I had time. I think that the sturdy grip prevented my hand from cramping up.

With regular use of the tool, shedding can be reduced up to 90%. It also reduces the amount of pet dander, which is what causes allergic reactions.

Terry and I aren’t the only fans of the FURminator. When I mentioned the product to a friend later that day, she said, “We’ve been using it a while. We love it!”

You can find out more info and watch a video of the FURminator in action at their site. Amazon has awesome prices and a nice selection (there are different sizes and a cat and equine version as well).

If you’d like to win one of 5 FURmintors, leave a comment here telling me about your family member that needs some help (and no, it doesn’t work on humans, although I’m a big shedder myself).

We’ll post the winners on July 16.

We have several fur members of our family that sure could use this. My dd is so tired of her summer chore of vacuuming all the pet fur every day. She wants them all to wear hair nets.

We have a double-coated, long-haired dog with white fur that shows up everywhere. It’s all over the house and you can bet it’s all over me, too. It’s particularly obvious when I’m wearing black clothes. He doesn’t like to be brushed, so something that works so efficiently would be really great for us! Thanks for the opportunity!

I would love one of these for Kona, our Malamute Retriever mix! We usually pay the groomer to do this. How great it would be to do ourselves!

My dog is a basset/lab mix with an insanely thick undercoat. She sheds majorly about twice a year, but she hates being combed due to arthritis sensitivity in her limbs. A comb like that would get the hair out faster and make the entire experience less traumatic for the both of us!

I would love to try the FURminator. We have two large dogs (a mastiff, and a mastiff/American bulldog mix) and two cats — as you can imagine, things can be rather hairy around our house!

I have heard great things about the FURminator, and would love to try it! We have a chocolate lab, and a pomeranian/sheltie mix. Both are what I would consider moderate to heavy shedders :(

Our german shepherd King is an inside outside dog so the different temperature changes make him constantly loose hair. The back seat of my car might as well be a shag rug. After I vacuum he comes in and by the end of the day there are hair bunnies blowing across my kitchen floor. Please help me.

OMG, do we need a Furminator!! When we got our precious Petra (a Jack Russell/Dashund mix) we thought, “Oh, short hair, not much shedding.: Boy were we wrong. Fur is on EVERYTHING, little short hairs that stick. We have a rug that was burgundy. Now it’s white unless I vacuum every day. Short of shaving her bald, it is a forever problem, but she is so very sweet we couldn’t do that.

We have an adopted 5 year old, 105lbs, Alaskan Malamute who is starting to blow his winter fur, I could really use a free large furminator and so could the dog and our home. The rake we have helps but not like a furminator, if I do not get a free one, I will be investing in one.

My friend breeds pomeranians. Right now they have about fourteen. The problem is they never have time to groom them and they live outside in a kennel. Summers coming up and we live in Texas. HELP US! I volunteer to groom them when I get a chance but nothing seems to really work. I spent two hours brushing one dog and got three walmart bags full of fur and there was still more, and these are toy breeds. Please help us
