Even when I was a little girl I loved being with my family on the holidays. Since Dad was in the Air Force, we moved a lot & weren’t always near family, so the holidays we would make the extra effort to see them. Since being an adult, I still love being around my family. I married into a large family which wasn’t as cozy as mine, but it was fun having so much action & it doubled the fun & food which was awesome. Neither side of our family had many small children, though. Last Christmas was our daughter’s first Christmas so she was completely spoiled by both sides of the family. This year we have another new one (they are 16 months apart) & she will be spoiled, also. It will be so much fun having a toddler around, too, so I am so excited!

My family’s in the Philippines so, it’s not always possible to spend time with them without spending the money to get there. But when we were children, we’d look forward to a festive Christmas and New Year as a family. We’d give and receive Christmas and New Year dishes from our neighbours, play and sing Christmas carols or go caroling. We’d open Christmas presents and rewrap them for display till the season was over. For New Year, the whole country welcomes it with firecrackers and we jump for joy (and to get taller) when it gets midnight. Then of course, we begin the midnight feast, that is also done on Christmas Eve as Noche Buena. Traditionally, kids also go around on Christmas Day to relatives and godparents to receive Christmas money, kind of like the red envelope for the Chinese New Year. I miss these nostalgic memories and traditions as it’s rather lonely in Toronto without my family. I still look forward to the midnight feast, which is jsut about what is left of the original festivities from my Philippine days.
