How To Make A Painted Love Sign

Tonya here… with less than 4 weeks until Valentine’s Day it’s time to start thinking about making gifts for those we love, and decorating our home to celebrate the people we love. I’m going to show you how to make an easy Valentine’s Day art project that’s perfect for your walls, but also makes a lovely gift, and can be left up year-round. Thank you to Testors.com for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.

See the little ‘love’ pallet sign hanging above my reading chair in the photograph above? That’s what we are going to be making.

What you need:

  • Plain wood sign (I found this one at Walmart for $2.97 – or make your own, you just need a piece of wood, hemp cord, and a staple gun)
  • Testors Craft 3oz Aerosol Paint – White Wedding Gloss and Gold Metallic
  • Testors Craft Acrylic 2oz Paint – Star Dust Glitter Burst and Deep Sea
  • Sticks
  • Stencil, or alternatively I’ll show you how to print your own below.
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue

Using the White Wedding Gloss Testors Craft 3oz Aerosol Paint lightly spray 3 coats of paint over the wood sign. By allowing each coat to dry before doing the next and just adding a light spray each time, you’ll still see the wood grain coming through and give your sign a shabby chic look.

Next, you can either use a stencil, or create your own, then trace around with a pencil to create the word ‘love’ replacing the ‘o’ with a heart. I created my own using PicMonkey.

Paint each letter with two to three coats of Testors Craft Acrylic in Deep Sea (allowing each coat to dry before applying the next).

Break sticks into pieces small enough to fit onto the heart … this is great if you have a child who loves to collect sticks from the yard or on nature walks.

Using the Testors Craft Aerosol in Gold Metallic apply a couple of coats of paint to each of the stick pieces.

Attach your sticks to the wood sign using hot glue.

Using the Testors Craft Acrylic in Star Dust Glitter Burst apply a coat to each of the letters.

And, there you have it, a lovely sign to hang up in your home for Valentine’s Day, and every day.

A great Valentine’s Day craft I have done with my girls is a puzzle piece frame. Take an old puzzle that is missing pieces (if you have kids, you have one). Paint the puzzle pieces red. Get a photo of your child. A head shot looks best, so maybe a school picture. Glue the puzzle pieces together around the picture. You’ll need 2 layers of puzzle pieces. Then decorate. We’ve just used a dotting tool and dotted them in pink and white. We’ve used nail gems and glued those on. We’ve also added a ribbon to hang the frame with. Finally, glue magnets to the back of the frame. Ta da! You have a cute photo frame for the fridge!!
