Easy DIY Kids Tent or Canopy – How To Build A Kids Tent

Kids love tents! For kids, there is something so special about having their own little space, so they can sit tucked away and get lost in their imaginations. My girls have always loved all types of tents… but homemade tents are definitely the best.

Our friend made this super easy DIY Kids Tent or canopy and we’re sharing the step by step tutorial with photos so you can make a tent for your children too. This is a corner tent… placing the tent in the corner makes a great use of space.

Supplies Needed:

• Hula Hoop
• Twine or Small Rope
• 2 Curtains (60 Inches or More)
• Scissors
• Handsaw
• Drill and Bit
• 1 Small Hook
• 2 Finishing Nails
• Hammer

Directions:

1. Carefully cut your hula hoop with a hand saw so that you have two half pieces. You will only need one of the pieces for this project. At both ends of the cut part, drill a hole. We used twine but you will need to make sure you have a bit that drills a hole big enough for whatever type of string you are using.
    
   
    

   
    

   
    

2. Slip your first curtain onto the hula hoop. Using twine or small rope, slip a short piece through both holes on your hula hoop. Cut a small slit on the end of your curtain that’s near the first hole on the hula hoop and slip the twine through each slit on the curtain. Tie it so the curtain won’t want to slip off. This will make the tent close better as well.
    
   
    
   
    
3. Slip your next curtain on and do the same thing with the twine on the other end of the hula hoop as you did in the previous step.

    

4. Measure on the wall where you want your hula hoop to sit. We didn’t want too much of the curtain dragging the floor so we did ours up higher.
    
   
    
5. Once you have your spot, start where one end of the hula hoop hits the wall and hammer one of your nails in. Slip the hula hoop onto the nail so that the nail goes inside the hula hoop. Do this same thing on the other end of the hula hoop.
    
   
    
6. Now, take your hook and screw it by hand into the ceiling above the middle part of your hula hoop or in the middle of the tent area (we already had a hook in our ceiling so we just tied the twine however we had to in order to make it work).
    
7. Tie a loop in one end of a longer piece of twine and slip it onto the hook and then tie the other end of the twine to the middle of the hula hoop.

   Note: We could only locate a blue hula hoop and weren’t thrilled with the color however, if you have more time, you can always use colored duct tape to make it a different color.
