5 Tips for Cleaning with Kids
- Embrace your child’s natural desire to clean.
My girls like to clean up their own rooms so that they can find “special homes” for all their toys.
- Keep the organization system simple.
You want your kids to know where their toys should go and be easy to put away.
- Turn cleaning into a game.
Kids love to play and if you can make cleaning a bit of a game, you’ll all have more fun.
- Help your kids not to get overwhelmed.
If they have too many toys in their rooms, you may want to have a bin where you rotate some toys in and out every few months.
- Make vacuuming easier by having kids pick up toys off the floor.
If your children are little, you may even turn it into a game where the bed is a boat and the toys are fish or luggage they need to bring with them on board.
When you make it fun, cleaning becomes a lot easier!

I have two girls at home and I am trying to teach them how to clean their rooms. The interesting thing is that they are really interested in cleaning and tiding their own rooms. Thank you for the nice advices!

Great ideas – turning it into a game (using a timer and rock music and a prize for the winner) was the key for getting my kids to clean up. Doesn’t work so well on the oldest now that he’s 17 though… *sigh*
Ha ha… yes, everything gets tougher when they are teenagers. I’m not looking forward to those days.

I have another interesting tip, if you have more than one kids. Make competition between them for doing some task. It will create a fun, and also your kids will not disturb your if you are doing some other cleaning.

True! I remember wanting to feel “useful” as a child. Whenever I was our car, my son would hold the hose. Of course, he does it when he hasn’t taken a bath yet. And it would be so much fun!

I’m always up for ways to make cleaning FUN…haha! As much as my two year old loves to help vacuum, I’m wishing I had invested in the toddler vacuum that actually works!!

I really like the idea of turning cleaning into a game. Everybody likes to have fun! Why not have fun while cleaning. Great concept here!!!
Sometimes I find that breaking it up into a few 5 minute cleans helps with stubborn/overwhelmed kids and big messes 🙂 I just set my timer on my phone and give my son two or three tasks to do at a time before my phone beeps. He gets a reward if he is faster than the clock. 🙂
