Last October, I sat in the theater at the Secretariat World Premiere, my fists clenched, silently cheering on Secretariat as if I didn’t already know the result, as if history didn’t promise me his happy ending.
Yes, Secretariat truly runs again, thrilling audiences with his story and his heart. Secretariat Director Randall Wallace does an incredible job bringing us along for the ride, and Diane Lane, as Penny Chenery, perfectly captures the conflict she feels as a mother caught between the responsibilities and joys of motherhood and her passion for her Secretariat and carrying on her father’s legacy.
In fact, I am so disappointed that Diane Lane did not get an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Secretariat’s owner Penny Chenery. Diane’s performance was powerful and flawless.
At the premiere, Erica and I had the chance to meet and interview Diane Lane. She shared her own experiences as a working mother and we talked about the inner conflict we all feel when we leave our children to go to work.
As I watched Secretariat, I found myself looking forward to sharing this movie with my son Jackson, and one day, my daughter Olivia. Not only will they love the action and thrill of the races, and the heart tugging tale of Secretariat’s triumphs, but I hope that the movie will also help them understand how parents can be torn between work and family responsibilities — that our love for our work doesn’t diminish our love for our children.

I would LOVE to win this! I was a bit iffy about seeing this movie when we ordered it through our Netflix trial, but my husband really really wanted to see it. We have Seabiscuit and thought it would be the same – I did like Seabiscuit but I watched it one or 10 too many times and have been bitter towards it ever since. Of course, he loved it but the movie won me over big time. Totally surprised. Now I wished we had kept it longer for the kids (who were sleeping at the time) to watch. My daughter loves horses. 🙁
