If so, you probably know that the much (MUCH) anticipated third and final book in the series — Mockingjay finally releases on Tuesday August 24?

So why the big deal? Let me backtrack a bit if you have not fallen into the craze. The Hunger Games is a Young Adult novel (YA) by Suzanne Collins that has found readers from upper elementary school well into adulthood. Parents are reading it with their teens, soccer moms are reading it with their bookclubs. It’s an intense futuristic, dystopian sci-fi/fantasy thriller. I have not talked to one person who read it who didn’t absolutely love it, even if that’s not normally a genre they enjoy. Case in point — 5 Minutes for Book reviewer Dawn. She usually likes character-driven women’s fiction. She enjoys thought-provoking contemporary novels that she can relate to. Read her review of the Hunger Games. And then inspired by Dawn, I got the audiobook and listened to it myself. You can read my thoughts on the Hunger Games, specifically from a mom’s perspective — because it is intense. If your child (or you) is sensitive to violence, you might want to skip it (though, seriously, I’ve not heard of one person who didn’t LOVE this book, no matter what they usually like).
Just about a year ago, the second installment came out. Catching Fire (linked to Dawn’s review at 5 Minutes for Books) furthered the story — and the love triangle — causing fans to resort to the Twilight-esque Team Gale or Team Peeta. I am going to have to wait to read Mockingjay to see if I am pleased with who she ends up with, because I just am not sure. But of course, there’s a Team Katniss for those who just don’t care who her love interest is.
And now, August 24 brings us Mockingjay. Here’s the summary: Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

I’d love to win, The Hunger Games has been a fantastic series. As a fourteen year old that doesn’t mean much to most people but the Hunger Games is a fantastic “young adult” series. So much so that my friends and I fight to see who reads the book next.

I almost purchased this book the other day. My son said, MOM THAT IS A KIDS BOOK! and then added, CAN I READ IT WHEN YOU ARE DONE? ha! I work in an independent bookstore and read as much as is possible including (but not limited to) teen fiction. I read Hunger Games and Catching Fire and recommend them to teens and adults. I began reading Mockingjay but then gave my copy away and am waiting for another to come into the store. I agree with some of the reviews which state that the third book makes this series more than just a futuristic teen romance. Elevates the entire series to a higher plane and the books were already pretty good!

I finished this book the day it came out!! and WOW. It was ahmazing. Incredible. Different. Sad, Disturbing. Happy. It left me hollow and I hated it, but because i hated it i LOVED it. Funny, but after Twitter was all a-twitter about Mockingjay yesterday, I picked up a copy while the fam browsed at Barnes and Noble. I’m not a fan of violence in books so I wasn’t interested in reading the series (and there isn’t any at all in the first few chapters), but I have to say it does draw you in right from the start. Am undecided about reading the rest of it, but I can see why it’s so popular. (And just from reading the first couple of chapters I finally have a context for so many cultural references I’ve seen. That’s a plus!)

Thank you for a helpful review. I have not read this series but I’m always looking for literature to introduce to my two pre-teens to encourage them to read — and read quality fiction. It’s rare to find gripping stories that appeal to such a wide age range (the “Harry Potter” series, but very little else, comes to mind).
I am anxiously awaiting the last chapter in the Hunger Games trilogy. I had no idea where the series could possibly go after the ending of book 1, but after Catching Fire, I put my full trust in Suzanne Collins to give us a spectacular finish.

Update her Facebook status, “@prim everdeen: what’s the best way to tie a tournequet??” Secretly listen to sappy love songs on her playlist as she mulls over Peeta and Gale (obviously leaning towards Peeta). Or maybe wind down after a hectic day of dodging flamethrowers by playing some relaxing games, like Frogger, who she oddly feels a connection to… Poor Katniss didn’t have this luxury in the Games. But I would be happy to accept it on her behalf! 🙂

I would LOVE to wing the IPod Touch! I have tried to get one for my classroom through a grant but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen 🙁 I teach kids with Autism and there are so many great apps out there that help them communicate!

I absolutely love Suzanne Collins, my 9 year old introduced me to her through the “Gregor the Overlander” series and from there I picked up the “Hunger Games”. Both series are quite enjoyable and a great read for old and young alike. Thank you for the opportunity to enter this great giveaway.

What a great giveaway! Can’t wait for Mockingjay. I’m rereading the other two right now.
I am so looking forward to Mockingjay! I loved Hunger Games, and thought Catching Fire was so-so…I know, I am in the minority on that one, but even so…I am looking forward to Mockingjay. I am going to be posting a buddy review of Catching Fire that my friend and I are working on, and once we are done with Mockingjay…another buddy review. I like doing reviews with her because we talk so much about books anyway.
Ooops…talking about my excitement, almost forgot to mention that my older girls are very excited as well, and I do believe that my most avid reader, my 11-year old, is ready to start the series. So yeah, the house is buzzing.
As far as the IPod Touch goes….this item has made it to my list of wants just recently as I just downsized our cell phone plane to only phone calls, and text messages (with teenagers, text messaging is a must). Hopefully I win. 😀 crossing my fingers… 😀

Reading is something I’ve loved to do my entire life. Now that I have two toddlers, I’ve barely made time for it. (Something that needs to stop!!) Mockingjay sounds like a great book to share with my step-daughter!
