Melody is a 9-year old girl growing up in Detroit, Michigan, during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Her inspiring story shows how she lifts her voice for equality. Reading Melody’s book will help your girls learn about this important time in America’s history.
It was so important to ensure Melody’s story and the product collection was historically accurate and culturally authentic, that American Girl worked for over two years with an esteemed six-member advisory board. They reviewed and gave insight into development of the doll, books, outfits, accessories, issues, and story setting. The Melody advisory board members included:

- Thomas J. Sugrue, professor of history at New York University and author of Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North
- JoAnn Watson, native of Detroit, ordained minister, and former executive director of the Detroit NAACP

My daughter was recently in the Junior League of Collin County American Girl Fashion Show fundraiser. She was selected to be dressed as Melody Ellison in the show. She absolutely loved being in the show, and had the opportunity to carry the doll during the show. She doesn’t have an American Girl doll and that was her first time seeing one of the dolls in person. She especially loved the fact that Melody’s last name is the same as her first name just spelled differently!

My daughter is 7 and she just adores dolls and plays with them all the time. She likes to dress them, do their hair, she even makes them furniture out of boxes and other recycled things. She has a difficult time learning at school, but is working very hard to get better grades as we promised her that she would get an American girl doll for Christmas if she gets good grades. She is working very hard and has been getting B’s since the beginning of this year. This is a huge improvement for her! We are so proud of her!!!
