When I first heard about the Your Baby Can Read series, I was immediately intrigued — and a bit skeptical. How on earth can someone teach a baby to read?!?
But since the program was developed by a prominent professor and expert infant researcher, I decided it was worth some investigation.
When Dr. Titzer’s daughter Aleka was born, he developed the program, “Your Baby Can Read!†to give her an early start in reading skills.
The results were incredible! By her first birthday, she could read more than 100 words. By age two Aleka regularly read 10-20 books a day and, by age four, she could read at the 11th grade level phonetically, on par with a 16-year-old.
“The results were so dramatic, I knew I had to bring this system to all families who want to give their kids a head start on literacy,†says Dr. Titzer.
Based on years of Ph.D. research in Human Performance at Indiana University, his unique program is a natural method of teaching infants and toddlers the written word at the same time they are learning the spoken word.
Designed for children ages 3 months to 5 years, “Your Baby Can Read!†includes five easy-to-use, interactive DVDs, five double-sided interactive sliding word and picture cards, one wipe-clean word card and one erasable non-toxic pen.

When my babies are under two, I am very careful about what they watch on TV and for how long.
But, during late afternoon fussy time, I have been reaching for Your Baby Can Read.
When it comes on Sophia is immediately drawn in.
Her face lights up in recognition when they sing “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and the words show on the screen.
Some days Julia fusses that she wants to watch one of ‘her’ shows, but I tell her that it’s Sophia’s turn for the TV and that Sophia wants to learn to read.
The result is Julia, Sophia and I sit and play while we watch the video. We have a great time together.
We’ve worked through two of the videos, but we haven’t followed the program exactly… so while I can’t say that one year old Sophia has ‘learned to read’ YET from these viewings, she definitely engages and concentrates on what she is seeing.
And I think it really is helping three year old Julia learn to read!
I am impressed with the program and I do recommend the videos.
The program creator does not pretend that these videos will have your baby reading by next month. Clearly it is a very slow process. But it is exciting to see what a baby’s brain can process.
And whether my children become early readers or not, I think what is most important when teaching our children is to remember to have fun and cherish our time together.
We are enjoying the videos and we will continue to work through the program. I’m going to focus on having fun with flashcards and increasing both girls’ exposure to single words.
I love to read and I think Your Baby Can Read is a great way to introduce my girls to the fun and joy of reading.

OH MY GOSH!! I just saw the infomercial the other day for this and I called my mom RIGHT AWAY to find out how much it was and if she has ever heard of it! I want this SO BAD for my son – but ESPECIALLY for my niece! She suffered from HORRIBLE ear infections for over a year until they put the tubes in her ears and now she is EXTREMELY behind in her speech. my little boy just turned one on the 10th of november. he is amazingly smart, i kno that every parent says that about there child, but in his case its true. he started crawling at 5 months, walking at 7 1/2 months. by 11 months he could run, do tumbles and say mama, dada, popop memaw, dog and cup. i have been trying to teach him how to read words, i even went as far as to label everything in the house…but i dont kno if i am doing it right! i really want this for my baby..if it was not so expensive i would try to save up and buy it for him. but u kno how that goes..diapers and food come first!!!

I saw this advertised on tv in Canada and was excited about it. I tried to get my daughter into a program that offered the same information as your child could read but the cost of it was just really to expensive in the three thousand dollar range it offered the same flashcard books dvd and with a third baby on the way i just couldn’t afford to spend that money. So i have been trying with flashcard and reading to them. My youngest kids 24months and 12months would benefit greatly form this.

I beg each of you to really think about whether you believe sitting your babies down in front of the television is a)the most appropriate stimulus for them to recieve during their toddler years, especially when social interaction and object play is what truly is best for them and b)an appropriate way to nurture their early literacy skills.
I ask this because as an early childhood specialist, research and studies from large groups (American Academy of Pediatrics, International Association for Reading, etc.) have determined electronic stimulation from videos (whether claimed as “educational” or not) is not appropriate for children under 3 years old.

When my kids were young, I read to them. I think that helped them to read ate early ages. This day and age, I see how little time my full time working duaghter has for her 20 month old for things like sitting down and reading. I would like to try the “Baby Can Read” program for her. It would not replace good old Grandma reading her a book, but could be a great tool for those BUSY-Mommy times.

This is a great review. My youngest daughter’s daycare provider recently started the kids on this. A 3 year old there is already recognizing 16 words and they’ve only been doing it a couple of weeks. I notice that my daughter (who is 1 and a 1/2) has some interest in it and in the van one day it sounded like she was trying to spell. And she says the words from the video over and over. So, I would love to be able to do this at home too.

Great give-away! I’d love to win. I have four kids, 5 1/2, 4 1/2, 2 1/2, and 14 months. My oldest survived brain cancer and started kindergarten this year and he’s just starting to read. Watching him learn is amazing….I just wish we could have helped him learn earlier. We use starfall.com daily with the kids, but I would love more tools to help them learn!

Wow…watching the little girl in the video really moved me. It was so sweet to see her identify the words and where “they” were on her body. I would love to win this set for my 16 month old daughter. It would also be an opportunity for me to spend some quality time with her while her two older brothers are in school.

I would LOVE to give these to our school’s developmentally delayed program. I think this could be a huge blessing to special needs kids or even to the large Spanish speaking group of kids we have in our school. What a neat thing!

This does sound intriguing. My daughter is 2.5 and is just starting to read short words, although she can read letters very well already. I would be happy to try this out.
How exciting! I am trying to teach my 2.5 yr old to read, but she is having problems going from individual letter sounds to words. I would love to be able to find something to help us over this hurdle.

I love these dvd’s, Evie (13months) has been watching them for close to 2months now and has learned a lot of basic words. She is not reading yet, but she recognizes a lot of different words now. I know a couple with twins who would love these dvds!
