My recent article published at Guideposts…
Can a collage show your kids how much you care?
The parenting-class instructor pulled out three large boxes of magazine clippings and a stack of construction paper and placed them on the table.
“Tonight we are going to have some fun doing an art project, just like something your kids would do at school. Using the magazine clippings, you are going to make a collage that represents your child…”
The woman sitting next to me enthusiastically started grabbing pictures. I picked up piece after piece and discarded each one.
How am I going to do this?! I thought to myself. My perfectionist tendencies prickled as I rummaged through the pile.

Wow. That’s so powerful. Because we have twins (times two) we often worry about them each getting individual attention and really knowing how much we love them. I’m going to work on doing this for my four boys! Thanks!!!
That was a wonderful essay. I’m in the process of making a scrapbook for my oldest daughter who is graduating from high school next week (my how time flies!) and I am hoping that it will convey the same thing that your collage did for your son. That was beautiful.
What a wonderful idea! makes me want to do one right now for both of my children!
What an awesome idea! I love how art allows us to express ourselves in ways that words can’t always capture. It would be neat to do that project alongside your child as well and see what he comes up with for “mommy.”
