A Scary Trip To The ER With My Toddler

My toddler suddenly started crying at about 6:45 PM and I could not console her. She wouldn’t eat a bit of food and wouldn’t even drink a bottle. I tried to take her to bed, but she couldn’t sleep.

I figured she must have an ear infection, because she’s had a cold and her sister currently has an ear infection and is on antibiotics.

I took her to a clinic. (Well, I took her to THREE clinics… the first two said they were not seeing anymore patients that night… even though it was way before closing time.)

The doctor said she didn’t have any sign of an ear or throat infection, but he said her bowel was in distress and that I must take her to the hospital right away. I explained that she often does have troubles with constipation and that her regular doctor had told me to give her PEG — which I often do. I told him she’d cried during a movement on Sunday, so I gave her some PEG Sunday night and again on Monday. I figured that too much PEG had upset her bowels.

But, he said I had to take her to the ER.

She cried off and on throughout the 40 minute drive to the hospital, but stopped crying soon after we arrived. For the next three hours she tried to sleep in my arms, but squirmed with discomfort. Eventually she fell asleep and we were called in to see the doctor.

The ER Pediatrician listened to her bowels and said they were still very noisy and overactive. But he didn’t think it was a bowel obstruction and he didn’t think it was the PEG. He said perhaps it’s a gastrointestinal virus or it could be something more serious — he said there’s some rare thing it could be where the intestines getting tangled or something like that. But basically he said we need to watch what happens with her over the next few days.

At this moment, I’m thanking God that it doesn’t seem to be anything serious. She is asleep upstairs in her bed and I think she is going to be fine.

  2. My goodness Susan.. that had to be scary! I’m so sorry you all had to go through that but happy to hear that she is getting passed this. Both of my girls have problems with their bowels and they have to be on Miralax. It really helps.. I’m not sure if they have that in Canada, but just thought I would throw that out there. Big (((HUGS))) to you all.

I’m so sorry to hear that your little girl is having bowel troubles…I almost think those are just about the worst kind to have. 🙁

    Praying for little Sophia.

I tackled walking the dog around the block — it has been 5 months since my spinal surgery and I can do it once a day now without too much discomfort if I go slow. YEAH!!!

But, that’s not as bad or as scary as a toddler in the ER — I remember those days, my heart goes out to you and the little one. Glad she is doing better, get some rest yourself.

  6. I’m sorry to hear Sophia is not feeling well. I hope today is a better day for both of you.

My tackle — which does not include photos — is moving an ex-friend’s stuff out of my house and garage. Whoo hoo! Today I should be able to finish the the job.

  7. Oh no! I hope Sophia feels better soon!! Is there anything the doctor said to help ease her discomfort or anything?? *hugs* honey

Bless your heart! I’m sending good thoughts and prayers your way. I hope that everything works out on it’s own and the little one feels better very soon! I hope you guys can “tackle” some sleep very soon.

  9. What a great idea! This is my first Tackle It Tuesday comment! I write for a mom site and I have to give an example from there. One of the mom’s daughter’s had the courage to tackle her own fear! She came up with a system of writing down in a book anything that scared her and then it wouldn’t hurt her anymore. It’s awesome when children can tackle their own fear and parents can learn!

It sounds like you “tackled” being a great mom and putting your family first. That’s what matters most. 🙂

I’m glad Sophia is doing better. I hope she wakes up feeling great.

  11. Oh sorry you had such a scary night. Thank God all is looking ok.

  12. She will be in my prayers

  13. What a difficult night; glad it ended well though. What did I tackle? Finally put together a “schedule” for my toddler & got some animal pictures colored & laminated to work with him on animal sounds — that project has been haunting me for a while now.

  14. Scary for sure. Glad to hear it was not anything serious.

I tackled a growing preschooler… not literally. Just tackled the problem and the solution was persistence and tenacity and determination: I just have to live through it! =)

  17. I’m trying to keep things very low key what with summer and all, or maybe it’s the jet lag but either way I think at least around here it’s a case of not sweating the small stuff.

Life, the big stuff……prayers are there.
    Very best wishes
