Emmy award-winning actress Mariska Hargitay (NBC’s “Law & Order: SVUâ€) has a fun new online project and, to kick it off, she chats with 5 Minutes for Mom about life as a mom.
In celebration of Johnson’s® Baby Pink Lotion, (oh – I just love that fabulous, iconic scent,) Johnson’s has teamed up with Mariska for some online animation fun. They have created a 3 part series of original cartoon shorts that focus on the importance of a mother’s touch (baby massage, etc.) in the mother/child bonding experience. Mariska is the voice of the baby in the webisodes. The first of the three webisodes debuts today at Johnson’s site www.touchingbond.com. Click over and check it out. I have done baby massages with both of my children as a part of their bath and bedtime routines. My babies love it as much as I do – and it is so wonderful when my baby’s skin is super soft from the lotion.
So when Johnson’s asked us if we would let you all know about their work to promote the benefits of a mother’s touch, we said sure! Janice: As a mom, my favorite time of day is bedtime – I just love the special routines I have with my children, especially bath time and baby massage with my infant. Every night, after I tuck my six year old in bed, I bathe my baby Olivia and give her a massage. Then we snuggle up in my bed for her last feed of the night. What is your favorite time of day with your son?
Mariska: I agree with you, bedtime is so special. But other parts of the day are great, too. For example, can you believe the kind of energy that babies have when they greet they day!? Sure, I’d give anything for another twenty minutes of sleep, but that kind of joy in the morning is truly a magnificent thing to experience.
Janice: Both of my children have loved their “baby massages.” It seemed to be my son’s, and now my daughter’s, favorite time of day as well as mine. What do you think of the growing trend of baby massage?
Mariska: I think if you asked the babies that question, you’d get a lot of very happy cooing and gurgling, which would translate loosely into “Thumbs up on the baby massage trend, mom.†And they’re pretty smart about these things!
Janice: What is it about the Johnson’s Baby Pink Lotion scent that you like?
Mariska: I think if the feeling of “cozy†had a smell, Johnson’s Baby Pink Lotion would be it.
Janice: You have such demanding hours for SVU – you mention on your website that you work eighty hours a week! – Are you able to bring your son to work with you? How do you manage to balance your work hours and your family life?
Mariska: You’d probably be hard-pressed to find a mom who would say she’s mastered the family/work balance. And I’m right in there with all the other moms, trying to figure it out. I was really fortunate in that I was able to bring my son to work with me. He loved it. Now that he’s a little older, that will be changing. Or maybe Benson and Stabler are just going to have to get a new little partner.
Janice: Do you ever feel guilty for being a working mom? Do you ever feel like just packing up your son and moving to Italy?
Mariska: Hey, I’ve felt like packing up and moving to Italy my entire life. So don’t be surprised if you see me on “SVU: Florenceâ€. But do I feel guilty about being a working mom? No. I certainly feel sad when I’m on set and I know that things are happening at home that I’d love to be a part of, but it makes the time I spend at home that much sweeter.

When both my youngest, and my next youngest, children were born, they were both premature, 10 weeks early for the older, and 7 weeks early for the younger, and while they were in the NICU, I was allowed a specified amount of time periodically, to ‘kangaroo’ with them, that is to have them laying on my chest, skin to skin, for bonding time. It was soothing, and very beneficial, to both them, and to myself. I was a mess, worried about them, each time, because of their prematurity, and all, but this bonding time was very special, and it still lingers with me to this day, as the most special, and important bonding time I could have spent with both of them.

I’ve had so many special moments with both of my baby boys but I think the best was teaching them to swim when they were still infants (about 6mo). It first was a time of establishing trust and letting them know that they were safe. Once that was established, it was the pure joy of seeing them enjoy the experience. As a result they both swim like fish and its a special time we can share together. I highly recommend it to other moms and there are so many good programs out there that have special classes for infants.
I hated being pregnant with both my girls and each time I was concerned that I couldn’t possibly love them. The first daughter I was sure I would never love her as much as my cat. With my second daughter, I couldn’t imagine having enough love for her as I do my first. Of course the moment they came out all my concerns were gone. I bonded with them during the pushing and the first moment they came to my arms and latched on.

My favorite bonding time is when my little one is asleep and I gently caress the sweet cheeks of an angel at rest.
My favorite “bonding time” would have to be those precious early morning nursing sessions. It’s calm and peaceful, just baby and me, before the day erupts into appointments, cleaning and sometimes utter chaos!
We cuddle every night after bathtime – my 6 year old daughter loves “cuddle time” just as much as my 20 month old son! It’s so great and relaxing for all of us right before bedtime!! This would be a great addition to our cuddle time each night!

I have two seperate bonding times with my little ones. First one is bathtime. We bathe, lotion, dress, comb hair, brush teeth and then snuggle before bedtime. Then she gets put into her crib and drift off to sleep.
As for the newborn, it’s bath, lotion, dress, comb hair, feed and cuddle her up into her co-sleeper.
The next one is first thing in the morning. I get them both up, dress them both together. The older girl babbles and kisses her baby sister until they are both ready to start their day. It’s a wonderful time for all of us!
From the moment my son was born I’ve been reading books to him. He’s now 15 months old, and we have this little game where I’ll shout a title of a book and he’ll run to his bookcase and pick it out. He gets so happy when he brings me the correct book, and we’ll read it over and over again:) I can tell he’ll be a great lover of books when he’s older. Thanks!

Kudo’s on the great Mariska Hargitay interview! She’s wonderful and I am very thankful that SVU worked around her pregnancy the way it did for her. Glad she’s back! As a mom of 6.2, I know how hard it is to juggle work and family, especially when the kids are little. Weekdays are crazy so my bonding time w/ my son is on the weekends. We spend the days together, having lunch, going to the store, watching a movie at nite w/ popcorn. We alternate movies. One nite its adventure, the next night I get to pick a chick flick. A bond between a mother and son is like no other!
Since I am pregnant for the first time I will (God willing) get to experience genuine bonding time with my child, say in Sept or Oct. I have a nephew and friends children that I interact with and love it but I know there is nothing like that special bond between a mom and their newborn baby. Good luck everyone!

My favorite time to bond with my son is when we read. We get lost in the books and read for hours. We snuggle in his glider rocker and read and read. Those are the times I wish he would never grow up and stay 2 forever!
Meals and picnics are some of our families favorite times together.
I had a difficult time with my disabled kid and found that on particularly stressful days, coming in to watch her breathe after she fell asleep was as good as my day could get – her peaceful and rhythmic breathing helped me to relax and dissipated the concerns of the day. She’s a great kid and I love her like crazy, but the stress was incredible (she’s doing much better now).

This sounds great! With my youngest, I didn’t feel like I had much time to bond with him right away. Family was here, I had a toddler to look after, and everything was hectic. Several days after he came home, he had to be re-admitted due to jaundice. It meant that I actually got to spend time with him, one on one, and I think it was actually really nice even though he was in the hospital.

I would love to win this gift basket – it’ll be great for me and my 8 month old. I have four children and my youngest three have all enjoyed the baby massage. My fondest memories are of my third child. She loved the massage more than the others and would always hold up her feet and be very still to enjoy the massage. She’s three now and I recently asked her if she remembers when I massaged her feet. She says yes and that she still likes it!

I have a 4 month old baby girl and I just love holding her in my arms and singing to her. I sing all kinds of songs, but love Somewhere over the Rainbow and You are my Sunshine. I just love it when I am singing to her and she is just staring at me with her beautiful big blue eyes just glowing at me. It is such an overwhelming precious experience day after day after day. It brings tears to my eyes just writing this, tears of joy!
I love it when my little guy climbs on my lap and we watch tv together. Or we’ll read library books, and that’s always fun.
I used to love it when my son would come toddling into the kitchen and crawl into my lap first thing in the morning. We’d snuggle and greet the morning.

So many great bonding moments with my daughters–bedtime/storytime, fixing their hair, in the car, Sunday dinner after church.
I love meal times, preparing food as a family and eating it is always a very important part of our day. We talk about our plans for the day at breakfast, what we have learned at lunch and how much fun we had as a family at dinner.

Lavender tubbies are still a favorite of my 4 year old and it still calms her down.
When my son was little, we always sat down before bed with a book of his choice and I read it to him. After that, it was kisses and cuddles before he fell asleep. Now that he’s older, he usually selects a book to read to me and he’ll read a chapter or two. Hugs and kisses are still a part of our routine.

I love the video and Mariska does a great job. There are so many bonding moments with Kristen, like blowing raspberries,kisses, rubbing her back, and tickling her toes. My children are grown and educated. Their father died when they were 6 &3. Once when they were teens, we were all in my younger daughter’s bedroom, and she commented that we were such a small family, we could all fit into the baby’s bed.(she had a queen-size waterbed, at the time)

It may sound crazy but my daughter and I have the most fun when she’s on the changing table. I blow on her belly and she just laughs and laughs. She loves grapping everything in reach so we play a lot of fun games up there. Diaper changes seem to last around 20 minutes in our house. Bath time is also a lot of fun as well.

I love the smell of a baby after they have taken a bath and then you put the lotion on. They smell so sweet. No other smell like it.
My favorite mommy/child bonding time is when my toddlers have a nightmare or a boo-boo and come running to Mommy knowing that a kiss and a cuddle can make everything all right. Whatever the trouble, they know I will drop everything and give them 110% of my love and attention until they feel safe and secure again. it was very hard bonding with my daughter. This is because she spent the first 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital. We have bonded now, and I love Johnson products. It helped me feel more relaxed with my daughter, and made me smile to know she was getting the best care.
I love the way they smell after a bath. I love to cuddle them up. Also as someone else said you can’t beat the cuddle time while nursing.

I make bath time a spa treatment… bath time is not also fun time but relax time… soothing music and gentle baby oil massages.
Being a working mom is tough! I suppose being a pioneer women traveling west in a wagon was, too. However, there’s no denying that being a career woman plus being a Mom requires keepings “lots of balls in the air” even if you have a cooperative husband & household assistance.

First thing in the morning
This is a wonderful prize..and I know a new mom that would love it.
One of my granddaughters and I have a special bonding time….whenever she needs it, she asks for “cuddle time”. It might be when she is upset, or tired, or just wants some time with grandma.
Our bonding time was after naps. With bunnies, blankets, snuggled on the couch or chair. I would sing softly, rub backs and tell little stories.
My son never really liked baby massage, but I still tried to do it. I do love the smell of baby lotion, though.

My husband does bedtime most nights as he doesn’t get to spend as much time during the day with our daughter as I do. On the one or two nights of the week that I get to do it, I love holding her in the rocking chair as she gets sleepy. At an active 22 months, it’s getting harder and harder to get my snuggles in.
I love sitting in our comfy blue chair, all snuggled up with a pile of books next to us and having my son “read” to me. Really, he’s memorized most of the books, but it is fun to hear him read to me anyway!

I bond with my two kids all day long. We spend our days together, laughing and learning. The mornings are always a bit more fun.
My favorite bonding time with my boys is after dinner and before bedtime. They get their little bellies full, get a nice, warm bath, and snuggle with mommy on the couch. They usually fall asleep while looking into my eyes. I wish they could stay small forever.
On weekends and days that hubby is home the whole family piles into our bed for some cuddling. We all love and the kids giggle and just love the whole experience with mommy and daddy. The baby joins in too. He loves the attention from big brother and big sister and mommy and daddy.
I kinda like early morning before we have to start getting ready. My son is particularly snuggly when he first wakes up.
Both by daughter & my step-daughter are pregnant. I’d love to win something for their babies…

My favorite bonding time with my baby is first thing in the morning when she wakes up all drowsy, and we sit in the rocking chair and nurse. When she’s done she often will suddenly become full of energy, looking around the room, laughing and smiling. She usually reaches up and touches my face, and really I feel she’s touching my heart. Ah… it’s perfect.

My favorite bonding time with both my babies is nursing them. Especially in the middle of the night, sitting in the dark, rocking & talking together!! There’s nothing like it!! What a lovely giveaway, thank you!!

Bedtime stories have always been my favorite bonding time with my kids.
It is very hard to pick a favorite bonding time, but I always especially enjoyed nursing and rocking my baby boy.
I love the evenings best of all. There is nothing like snuggling with my babies when they are all fresh-smelling from their baths, dressed in cozy pj’s, have full tummies, and ready to be rocked to sleep in my arms listening to lullabies. (We love House at Pooh Corner by Kenny Loggins.)

We read tons to the other two and snuggle before bed — tons of fun. That’s how we have bonded so far … we also have a family hug before bed time. Thanks for the great giveaway! I love to sit and read with my children, they snuggle up and the sweetest thing is when they are trying to listen to the story but can’t keep their eyes open and sleep gets the better of them.

I did massage my son when he was a baby…there is alomst nothing better than that baby smell. Now, my son is 5 and we still have our bedtime massage ritual…but now he calls it “scritches’. Not sure how it morphed to that word.. but he always asks for some ‘scritches’ before I leave him for the night.

My favorite part of the day with my daughter is when we read a bedtime story and she cuddles in my lap. I was so excited to see an interview with Mariska…my husband and I love watching SVU and she’s my favorite character!
I was always the bad mom that would purposely give my son a bath just so he would smell good to go out (even if he didn’t need one!) And when the nurse asked me when he was born if she could put him on my chest, I said (and I quote) “Not unless he smells like Johnson’s Baby Lotion–please go clean him up!” My hubby nearly died!–hey, I was on pain killers and hormones!

I’ve always felt bonded when reading books with my children, even when they were infants.
I’m with Mariska. Nothing beats the morning coos of the baby in her crib next to us. Or the gigantic gummy smile she gives as soon as she sees me.

My DD & I rub lotion onto her skin every nite as we dress her for bedtime. Then we hug and I tell her how good she smells. Next she tells me what a beautiful day it is and I tell her how every day w/ her in it is beautiful!!!!

I’m teaching my husband to use baby massage to establish the same kind of intimacy with our son that I have with him when we nurse. We would love this gift basket to help with that. And thanks for the interview!
I love when my boys climb up into my lap at the end of a long day so that I can quietly read them a book, or when I tuck them into bed at night. They are precious little boys and I love every ounce of them!

As for favorite bonding times with my children, I’d have to say bedtime is my favorite. I read several books with my 3 year old, say prayers, and sing “Baby Mine” to him each night. We love this routine.
Now that we have a 3 month old FD, I like to lather her up with lotion after bath and give her a leisurely massage before bed. She loves it! 🙂
