“I have the greatest sister ever,” my 7-year-old son, Jackson, chirped as he skipped along the beach, chasing 20-month-old Olivia. I smiled and sighed. I knew that my son truly meant it.
Jackson adores his sister, with as much love as a boy can have. His love for Olivia bubbles up inside him, spilling out in hugs, playful games and words that many 7-year-old boys would never dare say.
But two years ago, the scene was very different.
To understand it, you really would have to know how intensely Jackson feels every emotion and how desperately he longed for a brother.
When Jackson was 2 1/2 years old, he even had an imaginary older brother—who had died. His name was Kieric and he had been hit by a car.
Jackson talked about his imaginary dead brother every day for about eight months. He told his preschool class about Kieric on family-tree day and asked me, “Mom, why didn’t Mrs. Wagg put Kieric on my family tree?”

oh that was so beautiful . . . I have one son (oldest) and two younger girls. My son adored the girls as babies and is quite enduring to the baby girl. He absolutely WANTS another baby and states that it MUST be a boy! Unfortunately, we have been trying for a year now, and now luck.
He is so cute!!
Beautiful post. I also had to tell my kids that our newest baby had gone to heaven. Even though God blessed us with another baby 2 months later (he’s now 6 months old)I still feel the loss of that one. Some losses you just never “get over” – and that’s ok.
That story touched my heat so much. My son wanted a baby brother or sister so badly 5 times I had to tell him the baby didn’t make it to us but went to heaven instead. The 5th time I had to tell him mom was going to the hospital and there would never be another baby. Now I have 2 lovely grandchildren, a big brother and little sister who love and fight but let anyone else step in and they will protect eachother to the end. My granddaughter, who is now 7, will stop what she’s doing and for no reason, look at me and say “my brother is AWESOME!” And when my grandson has 2 dollars and we go to the dollar store he runs over with his first find, something for his little sister, and then he runs off to find something for himself…..not bad for a step brother and step sister.
That was beautiful and brought tears to my eyes!
We experienced a miscarriage, too, and to this day it brings tears to my eyes. And it’s been 3 years.

Janice, that was one of the most beautiful, heart-felt pieces I have ever read. Continue to develop Jackson’s emotional side and ability to express himself…that is a trait that many people consider too vulnerable, but it is such an awesome, well-needed character trait to have. :o)
Beautiful post, Janice! I see the same love between my 7 yr old and her 3 yr old sister. They have their moments, but I believe they will be best friends all through their lives.
