5 Minutes for Books: Day is Done book and CD

Music and children’s literature go together like peanut butter and jelly to this picture book loving mom. My kids and I adore curling up with books that can be read and sung, and when one has the bonus feature of an accompanying CD, we’re blissfully happy.

Peter Yarrow has provided that happiness again for us with his new illustrated songbook, Day is Done, including a three-song CD to highlight his recording of the title song and two additional tunes.

An endearing and reassuring story, this song seeks to comfort a young child’s fears with the presence and loving words of a parent at bedtime.

With adorable watercolor illustrations showing parent and child duos in the animal world also preparing for the evening, this book evokes the dedication a parent feels toward keeping his or her child safe, protected and loved (Pay close attention to the animals featured throughout the illustrations, as my 3 year old daughter enjoyed their recurrence in stuffed animal form in the boy’s bedroom at the end!).

Of course, the CD recording is typical Peter Yarrow- folk music with his signature warm voice, seemingly inviting you to sing along. Day is Done is a welcome addition to any young child’s musical and literary library.

Today might be your lucky day, because we have one copy of Peter Yarrow’s Day is Done to give away to a reader (US residents only, please). Leave one comment here to be entered, and we will announce the winner in this column next Monday.

We do not have a winner to announce from last week, because last week’s giveaway is still open. Click through each separate review now for your chance to win your own autographed copy of 3 different exceptionally illustrated children’s books from Shankman and O’Neill:

The Cods of Cape Cod
I Met a Moose in Maine One Day
The Boston Balloonies

We also have several other giveaways running right now at 5 Minutes for Books. Click over and enter them too.

Written by 5 Minutes for Books contributing editor Dawn, who also blogs about her life and family at my thoughts exactly.

Don’t wish to win it — just wanted to say, I’m now humming the Peter, Paul and Mary “Day is Done” song! Another really good bedtime book is “Time For Bed.” We just gave that to my great nephew for his 1st birthday. My niece says Jimmy loves it!

And for all moms out there, I wanted to throw in a quick recommendation — as I’m so enjoying it — “Mystic in a Minivan,” by Kristen White. I think moms everywhere can relate — Jenna is living the good life, the blessed life which (naturally!) goes kablooey. So she sets out on a journey of enlightenment. It’s “The Celestine Prophecy” for moms! The author even includes free downloadable workbook to help others on the spiritual journey within (if I may be so touchy-feely, which I’m normally not).

Now, off to comment on other entries…
