I feel like my personal policies about books and movies are being challenged. I never used to reread much, but now having read The Book Thief shortly before screening the movie and enjoying the background that it provided, instead of choosing NOT to read a book shortly before I see the movie, I think I’ve moved into the reread the book first camp.
After I saw the Hunger Games movie, I immediately reread Catching Fire, and with the release of the Catching Fire movie coming up on November 22, I have a strong strong desire to reread the book.
It’s a good story, a multi-faceted one, and I think rereading will help me remember the characters and the background. If you haven’t read the Hunger Games, but you’ve just seen the movie, I think you could just jump into the 2nd book if you wanted to as background for the 2nd movie. You could certainly read it afterwards.
You might even be in the situation where you missed seeing the Hunger Games movie, despite all the hubbub. You have time to solve that problem too. I would definitely see the first movie before you watch the second.
This one looks good. They were obviously working with a bigger budget. Additionally, the setting and themes of this one lend themselves to a great visual feast. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens nationwide November 22. My 15-year-old daughter and I are really excited about this, so much so that my daughter deemed the promotional package of Hunger Games: Catching Fire chocolates that I received, “The coolest thing I ever received.”
