David Shannon is awesome. You might be familiar with his No, David books, or A Bad Case of the Stripes. When I heard about his newest book, Bugs in My Hair!, I thought, “Who would write a book about lice??” Well, in this short video, author David Shannon — sounding just like a picture book author should — shares why he tackled this subject. The video also features many of the illustrations from the book, so it’s an excellent look at what you can expect from the story.
I remember getting lice when I was in middle school. I think it was summertime, so I wasn’t quite as humiliated as I might have been if I had to go to school. My kids have escaped lice, and at 9 and 15, I’m hoping we have gotten away with it. I honestly don’t know if I could handle it!
But books like this remind parents and kids that lice is just another one of those experiences that many school kids have. If you can’t beat ’em, laugh at ’em!

Yes when my daughter was little. It went around the whole school twice.Eww so gross! It’s making me itch just thinking about it. LOL! These are cute books. My 2 nieces would like them.Thank you 🙂
My family has never never had lice
No lice in our family…yet
I had lice in Junior High. I remember doing school work and this bug dropped onto my paper. I told my mom about it when I got home and she ran for the pick! She lifted up my hair and looked around, and then screamed a little… My whole family had them. After a lot of washing and cleaning we got rid of them… Ugh, they are nasty things!
when i was little i got them all the time, it was horrible
When I was little I did- it got passed into our home several times in fact!
I had them in 1st grade, luckily my kids never got them! 🙂
no lice over here yet 🙂
Never, but with the amount of kids growing and growing at the school, I realize it may only be a matter of time.
My oldest daughter got lice once when she was in preschool.
no lice in our family
We have thankfully not gotten lice yet– dreading the inevitable notice from the school!
We’ve managed to avoid lice in our family but have had enough scares (good buddies of my daughter having them) that we own a lice comb and I spray my daughter’s hair with Fairy Tales Rosemary Repel every day!
nope never thankfully!
Yes my neice and nephew got lice from school. It was not fun!!
We were living in a 7 person home a few years back (renting a split level with another family we’re friends with). One of the two kids got them. Then everybody got them. It was a nightmare.
No thank God.
Thankfully, no, we’ve not had to deal with them.
My kids haven’t had lice, but I got it when I was a kid.
My son, years ago.
Yes my daughter had it when she was four, it was really hard to get rid of
I had lice once in elementary school, but not since.
Thankfully, no, we’ve not had to deal with them!

I had it once when I was a little kid. My kids have not had it
So far my kids haven’t gotten it but I did when I was little
No; clean here!
Yes, unfortunately it has!
My kids are grown up now but they caught the lice when they were in grade school, and..it was awful, they are so hard to get rid of, I thought I was going to have to shave their heads..lol I am so glad there is a childrens book about this, there is so much stigma attached to having lice, and we all know it has nothing to do with cleanliness or where you live, everyone is at risk if you have children in school. If I win I plan to give the books to my 4 yr old granddaughter, I think she will enjoy them and also learn from them.
Not yet, knock on wood.
Not yet (fingers crossed!)
No lice here. But there was a kid in my daughter’s grade just diagnosed with scabbies.
No one in my family has had it (yet!) but there have been many times the dreaded letter has come home from school and we hold our breath!
On more than one occasion when I was a kid!
No, not yet – though I’m a teacher with long hair and see 700 kids a week, so I consider it inevitable at some point in my career! 🙂
No we haven’t
Haven’t had lice here, yet…. Oldest just started kindergarten, so I’m sure we will have it one day. Ugh.
No lice here, thankfully.
Yes, I had it!
Thankfully no (KNOCK ON WOOD), not yet!
my daughter had it 4 times last year. Her classmates kept passing it back and forth
Yes, all of my kids and myself have had lice. ICK!
Thank goodness I have not had to deal with lice.
Yes,2 years ago lice came here.
It was her 1st year of school and I had to cut her hair…
Yes unfortunately. Getting rid of it was very hard work. And I felt so bad for our daughters.
I had them when growing up.
Lice is not fun! I never had any experiences with lice as a kid, but my children once got it at their elementary school. We freaked out so much that I was washing their sheets and vacuuming every day. Luckily, the over-the-counter medicine I bought did a great job in getting rid of those icky critters.
Unfortunately yes many years ago. It can happen to anyone. It does not discriminate.

We seemed to always be de-licing when I was a kid. . . but so far have kept it out of my kids!
No, but my sisters kids got it
We are lice free so far! And blessedly, I was spared as a child, too.
I had lice as a kid but we haven’t had it with the kids yet
OH, my gosh! I had three girls with long… THICK hair … school years were a nightmare when it came to lice … hours and hours and hours of combing through tiny pieces of hair in natural light … I hated it and I’m so glad that my son is now 13 and I likely don’t have to go through it any longer. My daughters, however, are finding out what I went through!
We’ve never had lice in our family. Thank goodness!
When we were in elementary school!
I discovered my kids both had lice soon after school let out for the summer. Thankfully, we have a lice removal salon near us where we could take them to get it removed. Not that it was cheap, but it was worth it!
Never, believe or not! Our youngest son has a head full of hair
and there was lice in his preschool, he never contracted it…
Thanks, Cindi
My boys had lice when they were in elementary school, what a pain! We have a grandson living with us now and I keep reminding him not to share hats or combs!
Thankfully, we have never had lice.
My younger sister had lice, but not now, she is completely free from it now.
No, we haven’t had lice YET, thankfully. Thanks for the giveaway!
Great nieces. While I had visions of plague, the doctor-mom explained that there are different types of lice and head lice aren’t scarey (to her).
never had lice.
Lice has not gotten my family but I did have it when I was little.
Not in our family, yet!
I can never get used to the idea of lice, although the classrooms at my husband’s school has at least a handful during the year. Tough to kill and disgusting at best but I’m glad that David Shannon was fearless enough to tackle this tough subject. Humor sometimes takes the edge off of difficult situations. And lice are no laughing matter. –Deb (DialMforMoms.com)
Yes, we have had them in our family.
Yes! Last year it ran rampant in my son’s kindergarten class. Kids passed it back and forth for almost three months!
thank God no !
We got lice in May. It was awful. I’m ready if it happens again though.
Yes we have
Yes, my daughters best friend in preschool had a case, and she brought it home. Hers wasn’t too bad, but I got it for the first time in my life… Not fun!
