Poor Bruce can't take the chaos of a full house anymore, so he decides to move... but not everyone is happy about it.

If you’re a parent, you will probably instantly empathize with poor Bruce the bear. Not only is his life busy because of the four geese he adopted and now raises, but he also has to deal with three little mice who have taken up residence with his family and simply will not leave, no matter how many not-so-subtle hints he drops. To say life is chaotic would be an understatement, so it’s time for a change. In Bruce’s Big Move, written and illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins, he does indeed go to drastic measures to bring about a little quiet in his life.

You and your kids may recognize Bruce from Higgins’ previous picture books, Mother Bruce and Hotel Bruce, but even if you’re new to his story, it’s easy to quickly get a feel for his personality. In one word– grumpy. Not that his baby geese seem to mind, or for that matter, the mice. Even when he’s at his wit’s end by the disasters those little furry creatures make in his home, they cheerfully keep playing.

Who can’t relate to that illustration, right? Well, Bruce decides it’s time to move, so he packs up his goslings and goes off to find the perfect home for their fivesome. After several misses, he finds something that should work just fine, and even though Bruce will always be able to find something to be at least a little grumpy about, he finds the peace and quiet to be perfect.

For a while.

What will he do when he realizes that his geese are miserable? Well, it’s pretty clear that Bruce is a good mother, so some grown-ups out there might predict what he’ll do next, of course. Even if they see what’s coming, too, children will surely be delighted by the happy ending (or mostly happy ending, since grumpy Bruce is still around!). He is NOT a grumpy old black bear, but he DOES like making books about one-starting with the best-selling Mother Bruce, which received the E. B. White Read-Aloud Award and the Ezra Jack Keats New Illustrator Honor. He lives in Maine with his wife and kids… and too many pets.
