I have a confession to make.
I use TV and my smart electronics as babysitters.
Not all the time, but often enough to feel guilty about it. There are so many other things I would like my son to be engaged in — physical activity, learning basic reading and math skills, and playing with others. But sometimes, you just need that break to get stuff done around the house, or simply to regain a moment of sanity.
Luckily, there is a wonderful new website and app that helps with all of that. Let me introduce you to Speakaboos website and the Speakaboos App.
This colorful and engaging website is kid friendly in all of the right ways. A friendly dragon narrates instructions and the home page allows you to choose from a type of story based on genre. Would you like to hear a story about adventure? Music? Sports? Fairy tales? They’ve got it!
After choosing a genre, you can pick a book. Then a narrator will read the book as the website displays the story in book form, complete with page turns, illustrated pictures, and highlighted words so that you can follow along.
This website is easy to navigate, and my three year old was able to pick it up in minutes. He was thrilled with the concept of reading stories online. I loved his enthusiastic reaction and felt good about letting him spend time reading and listening to books online instead of watching mindless TV.

While the website is amazing, the app is even better! If your kids are like mine, they are always wanting to play on my smartphone or on my tablet. The one thing I love about Speakaboos is that I know it promotes literacy while engaging my kids on all my digital devices.
- Speakaboos interactive books can effectively compete with videos and games for young childrens’ attention and inspire a life-long love of reading
- Because this is a child-directed experience, I know that my kids will spend hours learning, because it is things they are interested in and not things I asked them to read or look at.
The cost of the app is $4.99 per month, $24.99 for 6months, or $49.99 per year. With this educational program, my kids can enjoy unlimited access to hundreds of stories. The subscription service is a definite plus in my book.
All of the books on the Speakaboos app and website are all educator approved. The interactive storybooks feature multiple reading modes based on a child’s reading level while animation, dialogue, and interactivity support comprehension.
Anything that gives educational value to my son and still allows me a much needed break is a win in my book. Speakaboos.com is a guilt free educational website that both you and your kids will love!

What a fun site! I admit I also use TV & electronics to occupy my kids, but I find that educational sites like this really do help.
