I am sort of joining in the 
Two Weeks of Toys Giveaway Event with a series of books for elementary-aged girls. Books technically aren’t toys, but they educate and entertain, and for that reason we all enjoy them. Toy or not, books are fun.
Lady’s Big Surprise by JoAnn S. Dawson is the first book in another fabulous series from Sourcebooks (they are the ones who publish the Fairy Chronicles, which we loved). I am always a fan of books that seem to transcend time–whether they were written fifty years ago in the last year, like the Lucky Foot Series. These books appeal to kids from any generation with simple stories of imaginative fun.
Mary and Jody are not just friends, but epic friends, which means “lofty in conception and memorable” as Mary often reminds Jody. Mary likes to talk; Jody likes to listen. In addition to that compatibility, they are joined together by their love of their ponies. Once again, I’d like to let a reader in their target audience, my nine-year-old daughter Amanda, share her thoughts:
These books are about two friends, Mary and Jody, and their horses, Lady and Gypsy. They go through lots of adventures together, exploring Lucky Foot Stables and the area around it. They even have a Secret Place where even more special adventures happen (and which they only talk about in whispers). In between schoolwork, Mary and Jody try to ride their horses as much as possible.
I would recommend this series for 8 – 12 year old girls, especially if you like horses. They are really interesting books!
