How Will You Savour The Moment on Mother’s Day?

Life as a mother goes fast. We’re constantly rushing from one task to the next and suddenly the days have turned into years and our babies are in middle school.

We moms truly do battle to get 5 minutes for ourselves. Even when we do have time “for ourselves”, it often is still somehow related to work or our kids. It really can be a struggle to make enough time for ourselves each day.

One of the times when I like to take a few moments each morning to relax is while I drink my cup of coffee. I wait to enjoy my coffee until I get back home after dropping the kids off at school.

Paradise for Moms

As I scoop the coffee grinds into the machine, I pause and take in a deep breath of the aroma.

When the coffee has brewed, I add some milk, stevia and a little cocoa.

And then I sit back and savour a few moments of calm before I start my work.

I imagine many moms are like me and use the short break of a cup of coffee as a mini escape from the stresses and demands all around us.

But our special day is right around the corner… it’s better than a birthday… it’s Mother’s Day!!!

And it’s our turn to slow down and savour many more moments than usual.

Win a Basketful of Coffee Treats

So to celebrate slowing down and savouring some peace and quiet, we’re partnering with Melitta to give one of our Canadian readers a lovely gift basket full of coffee treats including Melitta coffee tins, single serve coffee cups, pour overs, filters, and coffee mugs.

How will you savour the moment on Mothers Day

We want to hear from you… how do you usually spend your time on Mother’s Day? What are your plans for this Mother’s Day? What will you do to slow down and enjoy time for yourself on May 8th?

Leave us a comment and enter to win at the bottom of this post.

Do You Know The Story of Melitta Bentz?

Melitta BentzI found the story of Melitta to be fascinating…

In 1908, coffee was brewed by boiling coffee grounds in a cloth bag tied with string. The coffee was cloudy and bitter with an oily residue. Then a Dresden housewife named Melitta Bentz decided to find a way to make ‘clean’ coffee.

She led the creation of a two-part filter with a brass pot punctured with several holes, and a piece of blotter paper from her son’s schoolbook. This was the precursor to the modern automatic drip coffeemaker. Melitta Bentz’s cone pour-over system is still viewed by many coffee aficionados as the best way to make great coffee.

Melitta Bentz’s innovation led to the establishment of the Melitta Bentz Coffee Company.

Comfort Coffee Recipe

Coffee is a grown-up’s comfort food, but this tasty drink satisfies your child-like sweet tooth along with your grown-up coffee craving.

You’ll find this recipe and others for hot and cold coffee beverages as well as desserts and savory recipes on the Melitta Canada website.

Chocolate on Chocolate Caffè
Serves: 1

Steps:
Spoon the chocolate syrup into a large 12-ounce mug.
Brew a 5-ounce cup of Melitta European Dark Roast coffee.
Carefully place the scoop of ice cream in the coffee, sprinkle with the chocolate shavings and serve.

Chocolate on Chocolate CafeIngredients:
Create chocolate shavings by running a sharp-bladed vegetable peeler over one side of a small semisweet candy bar. Store any unused chocolate in a self-sealing plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

  • 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
  • 5 oz of Melitta European Dark Roast coffee
  • 1 scoop chocolate fudge ice cream
  • 1 tablespoon semisweet chocolate shavings

Our tradition the last few years has been to go to a Mother’s Day brunch. My mom appreciates even the smallest gestures but I prefer to go all out for her. I love buying her gifts, taking her out and spending the whole day together.

For the past few years my husband and I have kept our usual volunteer shift with a local charity that serves lunch to the Homeless and food-insecure in a nearby city every Sunday. My Mom will probably also help the charity with food prep, and we’ll help with standing on the street corner and serving it. So no fancy dinner, no special event, just us doing what she raised me to do. I did send her flowers though so its not like we don’t celebrate.

Church AM, then go to see either my mom or husbands. Then get together for a cookout at our house for dinner. This year he is going to see his mom, whom is very sick. I am going to see my mom who is very sick. One child is in another state, one is up north, one is working, another taking off for their own mothers day weekend, another is in finals for his freshman year and the other is a mom doing online school and she is going to be working on that. So. I might go fishing. We will probably celebrate the following weekend. For us, the older moms of the families get attended to first…well, out of respect and sadly the fact that their mothers days may be limited. We want to spend all the time we can with them!

I usually visit my mom on Mother’s Day. She will be 92 years old this year and she’s still going strong. My son and I usually take her out to eat or pick up take out and go to her house. Later my son and I go home and he gives me his homemade gift and helps me cook dinner. I like to spend the rest of the day relaxing.
