For the cookies:

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar for coating
  • ½ cup confectioners’ sugar for coating

For the decorative spider:

  • 1 stick butter softened
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 2-4 tbsp milk
  • Violet gel food coloring
  • Candy googly eyes
  • Yields: One dozen cookies

  1. In a bowl, mix together cake mix, oil and eggs. Once your cookie dough is formed, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  2. Once chilled, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Roll your cookie dough into 1 ½ inch spheres and coat with granulated sugar followed by the icing sugar. Place gently on lined sheet, about 2 inches apart.
  4. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes and allow to cool completely on a wire rack.
  5. Once cookies are cooled, start making your buttercream frosting. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk until smooth. Add food coloring and mix until completely blended.
  6. Using Wilton tip #12 , frost a dollop of buttercream in the center of each cookie and place two candy eyes. With Wilton tip #8 , frost out 4 legs on each of its sides.
