I know – I am baby crazy over here! What can I say? After so much waiting, now I just can’t think about much else. Susan said to me tonight, “Can you please post about something else?!?” And I promise I will tomorrow – but I just couldn’t resist first asking you about what baby names you like.
See last night I crawled into bed far too late, but I still couldn’t sleep. So I pulled out this book, The Complete Book of Baby Names and started reading.
(Susan thinks I am nuts. “It is too early Janice!” she worries. But I figure, if I lose this baby it will hurt just as badly as if I worried every day. So I mine as well linger in the moment and enjoy every second of day dreaming I get.)
I have a thing for baby name books – I just love reading them! Even when I am not pregnant, I love to read them and talk about names. I remember buying a baby name book when I was first married and dreaming of the day I would finally get to be a Mommy. I had Jackson’s name picked out years before he arrived.
The Complete Book of Baby Names
is so fun too. It isn’t just a list of names – it is like a course in baby-naming! With chapters on baby-naming history, naming trends, the attributes of a perfect name, middles names, etc. as well as 276 fun name lists like popular names in different countries, and bizarre lists such as the names of models, First Ladies, Reality TV Stars and more, this book could keep me going until I deliver!
But the most fun is finding out what names my friends like. So in the comments leave me some of your favorites. You never know – I may just choose one of them. 🙂

I like normal names, names that aren’t too trendy because I don’t want my kid to be in a class with five Maddie’s. My favourite boys name is Michael. The other ones I like are Thomas and Jason. For girls, my favourite is Claire. I also adore Samantha. For some reason I really love the name Valerie, I just think it has a nice ring to it. I like a lot more girls names than I do boys, because I also love Catherine (only spelt this way), Anna, Rebecca and Kylie.

Boys:

I really like the name Lydia for a girl and Kayden for a boy. I also like the name Caidence for a girl. I had a bunch of names until you asked me. I also like the name Tucker for a boy, or Major.
I also wanted to say congrats on your pregnancy! It has been so busy here that I am a little behind on the blogger world!

Very exciting! We’re picking out boy names now since we found out last week it’s a third boy on the way! I love baby names, too!

I just found your web site (amazing by the way) and thought I would jump in on this post even if it is a bit late.
I picked out my son’s name when I was 16 years old, of course he wasn’t born until 8 years later. I still used the name I had picked out all those years ago though. His father didn’t object but if he had I would have made his life miserable!!! His name is Christian Read. The middle name is spelled like that because it was my maiden name and I really wanted it to be a part of my son’s name. My dad brags that he is the only grandchild who has his last name by choice.
When I was pregnant with my daughter we could only agree on one name and that was Cheyenne. It wasn’t until we were driving to the hospital and I was just hours away from giving birth that we picked the middle name, Nichole. I chose an unusual, more old fashioned spelling for it as well.
Now we are adopting a boy from Kazakhstan and have changed our mind on his name. We want to keep his heritage in his name. There are not alot of Kazakh names that we really liked, but since Russian culture is a big part of the country (and turns out our boy is of partial Russian decent) we decided on a Russian name. At first it was going to be Pavel Anton but we have recently decided on Dmitrii Ilyas.
I love the idea of including family names or names from your heritage for children. Before we decided on adoption and thought of having a biological child we really liked David Edward… one name from each grandfather.
Cheyenne is still the only girl’s name I have ever really loved. Maybe that’s why we decided to adopt a boy!?!
I work in a doctor’s office so I see ALOT of different names. Some are unusual and some are WAY overused. I could keep going on this topic forever… maybe I should do a post on this subject on my site.
Stay positive and I wish you well.

Of course I like Olivia and Grayson!:) I also like Claire, Avery, Ellie, and Caitlyn for girls. Boys….that’s always a little more difficult. I can’t think of any boy names right off that I just love (except Grayson!). My kids names are:
Olivia Grace
Grayson Wright

I have three kids… Jacob Charles, Kelly Kathleen and Ella Rose. We get the most compliments on Ella’s name. Everyone that hears it comments on how much they love it.

I am due in about 4 weeks (AAAHHHHHHHHH!), and we’re expecting a girl. So far, 2 names we can agree on are Mia and Katia. You see, hubby likes classic girl names and like “earthier” names like Sierra, Sienna, India, etc… So agreeing on 2 names is a big deal. One thing is sure, her middle name will be Skye (again, if it was up to me, that would be her first name!!). For some reason, we’re finding it easier to come up with girl names, than for a boy.
You see, during my entire pregnancy with our son, who will be 17-months old on Sunday, we COULD NOT agree on a name we both liked. Finally we said “Screw it! Let’s wait to see what he looks like!” Folks didn’t believe us when we said we still hadn’t picked out a name. (If we’d have had a girl, we’d have named her Alexia. For some reason, we both don’t like it this time around… Weird.)
When he was born, we still were clueless — but not for long. For some reason, the second I saw him, the name Zachary popped in my head (a common name, I know… but what can I say?). When I asked hubby what he thought of Zachary Skyler (again, middle name was decided on way ahead of time), he agreed. Of course, we look at him now and could think of no other name that suits him so perfectly…
One of my favorite baby name books: “The Baby Name Wizard.” While I find the selection quite limited, I love that each name has a “popularity chart” and popularity ranking (so you see how common the name is). It also lists Nicknames, Sister/Brother names and there’s a short paragraph, describing what will most likely comes to people’s minds when hearing your child’s name or a brief history.
Check out this cook link, which ranks your child’s name: http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

Hey Janice! You are just so cute! I must say you are so bold posting about this and letting people comment! We didn’t tell our little ones name till after he was born and my in-laws just that it was the rudest thing. I didn’t because I wanted to be the very first one to scream his name out when he came out. It was a gift from the Lord, completely, because I had a c-section and when my husband brought him over to me in the OR, he was crying crying crying, but as soon as I said his name, he calmed down. It was a sight. We had umpteen boy names and only 2 girl names, so as much as I love them, I don’t share them with anyone. 🙂 David Jeremiah is our little boy. The rule for naming in our house is one name has to be a family name and the other must be a biblical name…as you can see, they overlap a lot. 🙂
Have fun and enjoy. We are praying for you.

Tracey, I have a Jemma who was almost a Jemima, but when we tested it out on a few people, the pancake association was just too great to ignore–at least among Americans. Gemma dates back centuries and was the name of Dante’s wife as well as a Catholic saint, but since it’s still uncommon in the US most people think I made it up.
I like Babycenter’s baby naming boards. Although some of the posters can be harsh especially toward those who are considering kre8tive spellings and invented names, they give a lot of good suggestions if you don’t take the criticism too seriously.
Tracey says
We didn’t have our first child for 10 years, and our idea of what names we liked changed. At first it was going to be Stirling for a boy and Mallory Kirstin for a girl. When our first arrived, after a LOT of thought, we have Alexander Jasper Davis (third is a family surname; actually all three are). Our second, born a couple of years later, is Arabella Sydonie Foster (middle name is the name of an antique rose; his middle name is also the name of a semi-precious stone).
Our last was the hardest. What do you call Arabella’s little sister that won’t make the new one sound plain or tomboyish? We decided on Jemima Celsiana Ashley (again the middle name of an old rose), calling her Jemma. But when she was about 15 minutes old, DH said “We are NOT calling her Jemima!” So we went on a long search to find out what Jemma could be short for. Found it on a website about ancient Roman history. Gemelliana (Gemma) is named for the Gemellian family, and Roman cavalry unit, of the Roman Republic. LOL! Celsiana then had to be scrapped. It’s now Eressea, which means “unique”, and Arwen, which means noblewoman (Welsh) and is the study name of an old rose in my garden. Ashley also stayed, as the name of my grandfather, who passed away while I was expecting her.
Had I not decided to go traditional and heritage names, they would have been Ocean Truth, Willow Grace, and Lark something. I met a little Willow Grace while I was expecting my oldest, and it just fit her–a little wispy three-year-old. It would fit my Bella pretty well, too.

I really enjoyed your post about baby names, and the history behind them. I wanted to draw your attention to “My Name Is…” is a wonderful series of children’s name books, written by Dublin-based authors John Gallagher and Eithne Diamond. The book series, which grew out of the authors’ own dissatisfaction with the history behind their children’s names, has received an impressive amount of press attention in their native Ireland. I think their series is worthy of broader exposure.
My recent interview with John and Eithne can be found at this webpage: http://www.babynamesgarden.com/mynameisseries.aspx
It tells the background story about the development of the series, which now includes ten names (a book for each name) drawn from the top baby names in Ireland and Britain. In the interest of brevity, I’ll sign off, but their interview is worth a visit!

When I was pregnant with my first baby, my husband and I settled on two names with nary a discussion – Hannah and Jackson (turned out to be Hannah Grayson!). With my second, there was a lot more discussion. We had one girl’s name chosen, Rachael, but couldn’t decide on a name for a boy. I really, really wanted Teddy, but I was shot down by just about everyone 🙁 I liked Justin and Wesley. My husband pronounced Wesley – Wezley, so that didn’t work. We thought about Grant, almost settled on Collin, and finally chose Jacob Thomas. I told my husband if we had a third baby, he could choose the name. Of course he wanted something crazy like Mo or Van (what was he thinking??). We were told the baby was a boy, so we finally decided on Bryce Richard. But when “he” turned out to be a “she,” we chose Bridget Pauline. All of our kids’ middle names were chosen “in honor” of someone important to us. And “Bridget” was chosen to honor my husband’s uncle who passed a few months befor she was born. His term of endearment for all us girls was “Bridget.”
I currently like the name Molly – I think I need to get a pet just so I can bestow that name on something. ‘Cause three kids are definitely enough for me!
Happy hunting!

Those are all such beautiful names!
I had a girls name picked out – I found it the night when I was reading the naming book. And I love the suggestion of Grace for a middle name. So I definitely have one firm maybe for a girl. But now you all gave me sooooo many more to think of. I am going to have some fun working through all these names.
But you know what is funny? Last time, I only had Jackson picked out. I wasn’t sure about a girl’s name. I was so in love with the name Jackson. And now this time I am so in love with this name I have that I can’t seem to concentrate on finding a boy’s name. Hmmm…I wonder if that means something… Plus – there seems to be so much more choice when it comes to girls’ names.
But I will start working through your suggestions and start building a list for a boy…
THANK YOU everyone for your wonderful suggestions. They are all beautiful and I LOVE all the names of your children. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂

I don’t know..one of the names I personalise so frequently is Lilly. One night I had FIVE Lillys- all spelled the same for different customers. I loved that name until then:-)
My friend just had triplets and named them Olivia, Sophie and Evie. I thought those were cute as well.

I of course am partial to my Zachary Mark and Reagan Elizabeth. LOL
Our other names were Colby, Brady, Kaitlynn, Mackenzie, and Jackson.
However, I think the 2 most played out names of this age is Ava and Nicholas, definintely not those 2. Also, just enjoy the pregnancy. Not worrying everyday about losing it can only help your chances. Good Luck

I love knowing how people pick their baby names. When I was pregnant with our youngest daughter, I came home one afternoon and my husband proudly announced, “We’ve picked a name for the baby.” We being him and Brenna-our oldest who was two at the time. Okay, I say to him, what is it and where did you find it. His next sentence started with, “well, we were listening to Jimmy Buffet…” I stopped him cold and said that we would NOT name our child Margarita, Cheeseburger, Paradise, or anything other phrase from the beach music. He laughed and said that it was Delaney. I didn’t know that Mr. Buffet has a daughter with the same name and had written a little song about her. Delaney suits our little “Laney Bug” so well. She is cute and quirky and comical and wise beyond her years.
Have fun perusing the baby name book over the next several months.

There are so many names I like.
For boys I like Jacob, Joseph, Daniel, Moses (veto’d rather stanchly by hubby, lol, maybe it would be too much to live up to and then we had girls anyway :)).
For girls I like Rebecca, Lily, Bethia, Alexandra, Isobella, Consuela (hubby’s family on his Mom’s side are Puerto Rican so we bad a few Spanish names as possibilities when I was pregnant), Gabriella, Clara.
My girl’s names are in that lot, but I can’t say which ones due to an embargo by hubby 🙂
What fun, I love name choosing

My husband picked Marcus because he’s a fan of Marcus Allen, the football player. I just love the name.

For girls, I love spunky names. 🙂 We have a Camryn Rae and we get soooo many compliments on it!
For boys, I like the name to be strong, classic, and Presidential. (I would literally think “Would there be a US president named this?” And if it passed that test, it went on our list. Some names are just too cutesy to be presidential.) For our boys we have Andrew Logan and Jackson Walker. Very presidential, don’t you think? 😉

We never told anyone our names before the babies were born. We like unusual names, but not too wierd. Waiting just saved us from hearing “you like that name?” Once a baby is named there isn’t much to say!
Our kids
Kellen Timothy (dh)
Lydia Renae
Nolan Miller (my maiden name)
Vivian Hanna (this is dh parents last name, it’s a step dad)
If Vivian had been a boy, the name would have been Sawyer (never did get a middle name for that though)
I also wanted to recommend a name book “The Name Book” by Dorothy Astoria. It isn’t quite as big as the one you mentioned, but it includes a spiritual connotation and a verse for each name. WE used it for all our kids.

I have one daughter Jacqueline – middle name Kelsey (My maiden name) – we call her Jackie. Jacqueline is a beautiful old fashioned name that I don’t think ever went out of style!
Boy names that I like:
Nicholas
Stephen
Kyle
James

Have fun picking out a name. Even if you lose this baby, you will have named him/her and that will be really special to you. I will pray you don’t lose this one though. May God grant you many happy years of hopes and dreams.
When I get pregnant (hopefully this month) we will name our boy Cameron James or our girl Anna Lavelle. James after my hubby and Anna after me. Lavelle was my grandmother’s name and we both just really like Cameron.

I agree with previous posts. You have to cherish this baby. With my son, I thought I was guarding myself against miscarriage by not telling anyone, and not trying to get too excited. We have 1 little girl right now her name is Anna Sophia! Anna is after my Grandmother (Annie) and Sophia is after DH’s Grandmother (Sophie). I am also a strong believer in family names. If we have a boy next time around he will be Jackson Wayne – Jackson after my great grandfather and because I just love it and Wayne after DH’s grandfather. If we have another girl I don’t know. We like Olivia but my cousin just used it. DH likes Kate but I just don’t know lol. Names are so hard all I could think about when pregnant with Anna was this is something that she will have her WHOLE life!!! I wanted it to be just right and I have to say Anna Sophia works for her. DH wanted Anastacia I told him that was to much of a mouth full with our last name. I couldn’t call it out when mad and it sound good lol. Give that a shot whatever name you are thinking about say it numerous times and loudly too cause you will be doing that a lot!!!

People would say “Claire is nice, but I’ve always loved (insert name here).”

We told everyone a different name than the one we chose as well. I had the name Claire picked out 4 years before I adopted her, after a friend named his child Alice Claire. It just resonated with me. Yet, when I would tell people many would respond, “Claire is nice, but I’ve always loved .” So! I started telling everyone her name was gonna be Twyla. 🙂

I tend to like more classic names. With each of my children I wanted to be sure they had names that didn’t seem ridiculous when they were 70 years old 😉
We also used family names for each of their middle names so they have that significance.
I have 4 children named
Nicholas Arthur
Olivia Gardner
Elizabeth Kendall
Lauren Grace
You’ll also notice that the first letter in each of their names spells out NOEL. That was by accident until Lauren. We didn’t have a name picked out for her and my friend mentioned jokingly that we had an N, an O and an E we just needed an L. My husband piped in with Lauren and it was settled.
Congratulations 🙂

We have two kids and hoping for two more. Both Hubby and I had picked out a little girls name before we were married. It is Karis Rose. Normally it is spelled Charis but we knew how badly the pronunciation would be botched.
Karis is the Biblical greek word for Grace. Rose is a thing of beauty. And that she is. How important it will be when can teach her what her first name means. It is the grace Jesus bestowed on us when he Died on the cross for our sins. The next Daughter is Olivia Anne and the next boy is James Isaiah. As for our first born He is Timothy Isaac. Isaac is the Old testement Hebrew word for laughter and anybody who knows Tim knows that is the truth!! I think It’s great you are picking out a name. . We have done that every time. Now matter how early it is. It gives you wisdom in how to pray for them.

If Marky was a girl he would have been Rebecca Ann and if Jason was a girl he would have been Brianna Elizabeth. Other girls names we tossed around: Marissa, Christina, Olivia, Lillian, and Hannah.
Enjoy every minute of your pregnancy. It won’t seem like it at the time, but 9 months flies by and that is the closest you’ll ever be to this child. Try to find joy in every ache, pain, illness, kick, movement and stretch mark. I loved being pregnanat. Even if I did blow up to the size of a small barge with both boys. Try to take care of yourself as much as possible and please try and rest and relax (even with your little boy). Let the house go. All of your Tackle It Tuesdays should be “I grew a baby today”.

Ummm, I know you’re looking for good baby names and so I like Keigan for a boy and I’ll join the others in saying Grace for a girl.
When I was pregnant with Sean we decided to keep the name a secret but we straight faced told people that we were thinking of calling him/her, Jorge (this is funny since we are in no way Spanish), Lemmington, or Antwerp for a boy and for a girl we were going with Rockwella or Awesomelope (you know, Penelope but with a lot more Awesome!) Yeah, we got a lot of looks when we told people that. I’m sure they were much relieved when we went with Sean instead!! 🙂

I say post away! Some of us are living vicariously through you. LOL!
I can see that your family is trying to protect you from disappointment, but I really think they should be more supportive. I’d think they would want to share in the joy of life whether it’s for 3 months or forever. If it were me (and I am pretty bold) I’d tell them no more negativity. You need positive thoughts around you. If someone were diagnosed with a terminal illness, they’d celebrate every minute they had with joy and mourn later.
My boys are Matthew Michael and Steven William. I also like Megan, Aubrey, Sadie, Cameron, Garrett, Tanner, Fisher, Hunter (we are outdoorsey) and James.
Good luck. I am with you on reading the baby names books. It’s fun!

I like Grace too – if we have another daughter, she will be Madeline Grace. I also like Mary Elizabeth. I prefer more traditional spellings of names, but like a name that isn’t too common. We have a Camden Joseph and although we call him CJ, I’ve always liked Camden.
Toni, I really like David Alexander! I had David Alexander picked out for years before even getting married, but an old boyfriend used that name with his son before I got the chance to use it!

Oooh I love baby name books too! 🙂 How interesting reading the different baby naming stories from everyone.
I have three children Anita Shamiso, Levi Rufaro & Isobel Shingai. Their middle names are in Shona (language of Zimbabwe) and they mean: Shamiso=Miracle,Rufaro=Joy, Shingai=Strength.
When we chose their (first & second) names we went with both the sound of the name as well as the meaning. Anita means “grace/graceful” (like Hannah), Levi is “unity/joined” & Isobel is “consecrated to God” (a variant of Elizabeth). If we have another girl I like the name Naomi, and if we have a boy…well I can’t think of anything that would top Levi right now, I just love his name (especially since I chose it!) 🙂 Not that we’re expecting another one (yet!) 😉

Enjoy your pregnancy! It is a lot less stress to be happy! Since I had 2 boys, I never used any of the girl names that I liked- Caitlyn Paige or Lily Paige- My middle name is Paige, but my HUBBY was the one who just LOVES it! Our boys are David Alexander and Luke D’Artagnan- curious? Our favorite book is The Three Musketeers- Written by Alexander Dumas, and D’Artagnan was the 4th musketeer-I will admit I was not thrilled with D’Artagnan at first, but now it is soo him, and really, how much do you use their middle names??

I like old fashioned boy’s name.. Joshua, Noah, Henry
For girl’s names, I like Daisy, Sophie, Emma, Haley, Amanda
When I was expecting, we had three boys names and three girls names (Rebekah, Jennifer, and Emily) we’d shortlisted but we both knew (without knowing) that I was having a boy
Early in the pregnancy I’d say to my husband really excited-like ‘oooh, ooh, what about Elliot?’ and he loved to veto names and come up with creative nicknames that children would call our child on the playground and use that as an excuse to not name our child whatever I had suggested. This time, all he’d say was ‘Elllllllllliiiiiiioooot’ you know, like in ET, with the syllables all dragged out, and I was thinking he was saying no to this name. We’d agreed on Matthew, Christopher and James for our little boy, but when our son was born, he didn’t look like any of these names and I was disappointed. My husband leaned down and whispered ‘he looks like an Elliot to me’ and so we have our little Elliot James 🙂 Hope you find the right name for you!

Nathan Levi. It is a old family name and I always loved it (unfortunately I didn’t have a hubby who did lol so it was ruled out)

I have to say yeah, what Robyn said. It will hurt either way, please go ahead and enjoy it, trust in God’s will. I have lost two and it hurts either way.
Names… I have always tried to name my children family names. Check into your family history I am sure there are some cool names in your family’s history.
Oh and I love the name Emily Elizabeth (you know the little girl from Clifford, The Big Red Dog)

Thanks so much for the encouragement Robyn! I am so sorry for your loss. How wonderful that you were able to know that they were girls and were able to name them.
Stephanie – thanks for sharing your story! I loved reading it – and I really like Grace – Gracie is so cute! (I am going to add Grace to my middle name list) Since we have a one syllable last name, I want the first name to have more than one syllable I think.
This is so much fun …I can’t wait to read more…

Oh and can I just say I think you’re so right to enjoy your pregnancy as much as you can. If something terrible happens it would be just as painful but you would miss out on celebrating the little life that you have right now. The babies that I lost are named and very much a part of our family, (not in a morbid way though) and I am so glad that for the brief time that they were growing inside me that we were excited and happy. Enjoy today and let God take care of tomorrow.

I love baby names! My daughters are Rebecca Elizabeth and Emily Karen. We lost two baby girls in between them who were named Stephanie and Anna so that pretty much covers our favourite girl names. If we have more kids we’ll have to have more discussions because I don’t think we make boys!
Boy names I like include Joshua, Alexander, Daniel, Christopher, Connor and Joel.

I had Elizabeth’s name picked out when I was pregnant with Joey. Gosh, it’s been almost 8 years now that I think of it!! He was going to be Elizabeth. Everyone kept saying he was a girl, they could tell from the way I was carrying, etc… They had me totally convinced!! My mom even started calling my tummy “Lizzie”. Then we went to the ultrasound and it was SO obvious he was a boy, I swear I about fell off the table!! LOL So… we decided on Joseph Robert. Joseph after his dad and Robert after my dad and grandpa. :o)
If Elizabeth had been a boy (and we didn’t know what she was until she came) she was going to be Alexander Merrell (Joe’s middle name and his grandpa’s name) or Nicholas and I hadn’t picked a middle name for Nicholas. I don’t know why, I just liked them. I still like Alex!!
If she was a girl I was pretty set on Elizabeth Ann but I considered Margaret Ann as well. Margaret Ann happens to be a name shared by my great grandmothers on BOTH sides of my family! The only reason I didn’t go with Margaret is because I couldn’t think of a nickname that hadn’t been used in my family that went with our last name.
I was leaning towards May but it just didn’t flow as well as Elizabeth. I have a Mary and a Maggie in my family so those were out and I wasn’t sure I liked any of the other possibilities. When I spoke to her birth mother on the phone after she’d been born and she asked me her name I didn’t even hesitate, I said Elizabeth Ann and I hadn’t even seen her yet, it just felt right. It definitely fits her!! The Ann I chose because it’s my middle name, her birth mother’s middle name, and both of my grandmothers’ middle names as well as the middle name of my great grandmothers’ so it’s a staple! LOL
I really like old fashioned names myself.
Other names I really liked but honestly can’t say I considered much since I was so stuck on Elizabeth were:
Grace
Rose
Madison
Haley
I like Grace a lot, it will go with anything and it’s great as a middle name!! I have a cousin named Katherine Grace and we call her Gracie which is super cute!!
Boys names are much harder for me for some reason so I really only had the two picked out!
As an aside, a friend of mine has that book and loves it and uses it to name her hedgehogs!! :o)
