Jennifer Donovan, 5 Minutes for Mom contributor, is thrilled to have rediscovered some family memories when trying out the YesVideo experience. We are part of a compensated ambassadorship with YesVideo, but all our opinions are our own.
When Susan was asked to be a YesVideo ambassador, she gave me the opportunity to participate with her. I was thrilled to be able to preserve some old video footage by converting it to a digital format.
It’s so easy to snap quick videos with our phones these days, that some of you may not remember that time before when we had to use a big bulky video camera, then transfer it to bigger bulkier VHS tapes. If your children are younger than 7 or 8, you might not have video of your kids, but in that case there is probably footage of you as a child on VHS or 8mm out there somewhere, fading and risking loss.
Preserve those memories
When my daughter was born, we lived far away from any family, so we took video of her periodically and mailed VHS tapes to our family around the country so that they could see her. When Susan asked if I had any video to convert, I immediately thought of these tapes. I had recently come across a tape marked “Amanda.” But when I started to look for it, I could not find it anywhere. Had I come across it and then thrown it away? I must have.
After searching, I finally found one 8mm tape inside my old video camera, and that’s what I had converted. Because it was the last tape, it actually had footage of my daughter from age 2 to 6 and some from my son’s first year.
I don’t have any digital pictures of my favorite Halloween costume that my daughter Amanda wore, but now I can easily pull up this video of her describing her costume and how beautiful she and our dog Shadow are.
All I had to do was put the video in the postage paid box that YesVideo sent. They even included tape. That might seem weird, but that was my favorite part. I often have to delay sending packages, because I’m out of packing tape. YesVideo could not have made it easier.
Lost and Found
I’m glad to have these precious memories preserved forever online in my YesVideo account and on DVD. There’s nothing like a first birthday celebration. My daughter’s is lost, because that video footage probably got thrown away in the useless format in one of our moves.
I can’t believe I did that!
I remember her first birthday, but other than a few photos pasted in my old fashioned scrapbook, it’s lost. She cried when everyone clapped after singing to her. Fortunately I can remember that, even if I won’t ever see it again.
Thanks to YesVideo, I have this video of my son’s first birthday, and her 2nd through 4th birthdays are safely archived in a form I can now use and share.
And Check Out Susan’s YesVideo…
