Tackling HTML… and unpacking…
Slowly over the past year, a tag here and there, I have been absorbing some HTML. But it has not been intentional I assure you. No, it just happened without me even noticing it. You see, I have been stuck here forever, ignorant of the ways of anything too technical. Sure I can do quite a bit on the computer, but for tons of things – even simple things like adding images to my sidebar – I call Susan. I suppose it comes down to two main reasons: First, I have myself in a box – I am not the techie in this twin relationship. That is for Susan. I will stick to the fun stuff – the writing, photography, blog visiting etc., and then just call Susan or Rob (her husband) anytime I need some tech support. But really, I want to break out of this box. I have been bashing around inside, screaming for someone to please help me out. But Susan, bless her busy little soul, has no time to spend on educating little ol’ me! Which brings me to the second reason I don’t know what I am doing – Susan doesn’t go with the “Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime” philosophy. Sure in theory she does, but when time is tight – and it always is – she doesn’t want to stop and teach me how to do something, she just does it. So, I remain dependent and she remains overworked. But lately I have been asking Rob to help me when I have a question because Susan has been beyond busy. He is much more of a teacher type. I am not sure if it is because he enjoys empowering me with knowledge, or if he just realizes the sooner I can do it myself, the less I will bother him. Whichever it is – I have been learning how to do stuff myself! How fun is that? And then guess what Santa brought me? (courtesy of Rob of course) Why my very own HTML and CSS book. So I am bringing in the New Year with HTML! No – really – I really am! I took it with me on vacation this weekend, and while the ball was dropping, I had my pencil in hand, working out HTML in my new book! Can you believe it – I am becoming a geek! Yes I was tad antisocial and while my in laws were playing Scattergories and Yahtzee, I was eyeball deep in HTML. If you want to get empowered too this year, I really recommend these Head First books. The writing is fun and easy to read. It makes learning this techie stuff totally do-able and not even that miserable of an experience! And, as for the not as fun tackling I will be doing this week – yes I will be unpacking – the worst part of a vacation. As you might remember from last week, I was in a mess before I left. And unfortunately, no little cleaning elves visited my home in my absence. So I have the old “Post Christmas Mess” plus the unpacking mess to deal with on this Tackling Tuesday. Boo hoo hoo. (That is if I can pull myself away from my new book.) Hope your Tackle is going great! I will be over to your place as soon as I can. 🙂

I recently learned basic html language in order to include text on my new website because the person whom I contracted to do it for me was too busy. I found certain tutorial websites that were very helpful in regards to separating texts into paragraphs, adding color to text, and increasing font sizes, including hyperlinking to emails or websites. At first I was intimidated by this unknown computer language but quickly found that my efforts, and trial runs were really paying off. What helped is a freeware software that helps to write html language and it immediately shows you how it will look online. Once I was happy with the feel and look of the written text, I simply cut and pasted the html language onto my web site. If you are interested in getting the name of the html writing software, feel free to contact me directly.

I think this is something I need. I just spent the evening trying to figure out the control panel to my new host for my website and I’m totally clueless. I think I added and email and that’s it.
Do you think this book could help me with that? OR maybe there’s another one, because even the online tutorials are confusing!!!!

I didn’t tackle HTML, I know a tiny bit of it but would like to learn more. What I did tackle was putting away the Christmas decorations. I dread this task so much every year, that for the past few years I have put out fewer and fewer decorations until you could barely tell we were celebrating Christmas at all. This year I pulled out every last decoration I own and then some, even tough it is a lot of work to put it all neatly and safely away, I’m so glad I did.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my first TT (When I wrote the post for it, I used the TIT and then edited after when I realized what that spelt, lol!!)
Can’t wait to do it again next week:)

I’m jumping in with the Tackles for the New Year! I love a good book recommendation — my html is very basic. I usually just google whatever code I’m looking for….like I said, very basic.

I FINALLY have my post up! I finished the job yesterday, but didn’t get back on the computer last night to post it. The pics aren’t there yet, my computer isn’t getting along with kodak today. grrrrrrr Off to work on kodak some more grrrrrrrr…

Janice: I’m so glad you shared this book. I was just in Chapters the other day staring at the shelf lined with teaching books on HTML and they all looked so complicated, like you already had to have a computer degree to get into them. Like you, I’m not the techie type, I still don’t know how to work the DVD player except to turn it on and off and get the movie going. So needless to say I am so going to check out this book.

I am a Firefox user and encountered no errors on my browser at all!

I like HTML, I have a book, but I’ve never opened it either!! I have picked up a lot just randomly as well, but I should really read the book! :o)
My TT is up and even with pictures this week!

This is my first week doing Tackle it Tuesday also, what a great way to be accountable!

This is my first week doing a Tuesday Tackle, though I think the task I picked is becoming the Tuesday-Thursday tackle cause I am not even close to done. I’ve been blogging about it along the way though:)

Good going on the HTML – if you happen to be at your computer and need to look something up quick – here is the site that I use myself:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp
It’s probably not as in-depth as your book, but it usually tells me what I need to know!
Mrs Lifecruiser says
Oh, I forgot that it was in Swedish! *LMAO*
But it says something about a Media Player module in Firefox that has done an not valid operation and that firefox need to be started again, but I can’t get rid of that message to even close the browser in normal ways.
I just wanted you to know, since this might mean that other users of Firefox can’t visit your blog either without this problem.
Mrs Lifecruiser says
Ah, sounds like a really good tackle! Useful even later on.
But do you know what? I may have a another tackle for you too:
When I’m using Firefox as a browser to read your blog I get an error message as soon as I enter it and it hang my browser toally so I have to shut it down via the Task manager.
No problem via Internet Explorer. And it hasn’t been like this before, I’ve visit your blog before without any problem, so something have got to be changed since then. What?
I’ve been upgrading my FF browser to the latest one too, to see that it wasn’t that problem.
I have no problem with other sites, just yours.

Thanks for the book recommendation! I have been learning a little here and there. My oldest son is my in-house computer consultant, but he’s probably moving out ( 🙁 ) some time in the next year or so.

I know exactly how you feel! I’ve been playing around with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) for my hubby’s clients websites that he did (he’s the designer), and I’ve also starting picking up on HTML, CSS et. It’s really interesting!
A really nice FREE tutorial is found at http://www.w3schools.com
enjoy!

I have got to get this book. You know I had Sandra design my blog layout and even put it on for me herself and whenever I have a problem I e-mail her and she kindly goes in an fixes it. What a great girl she is, but you’d think I might want to learn a few things for myself. I will definitely pop over to Amazon and put this one on my wish list.

What a really cool book. Great Tackle!

Great tackle! My hubby is a software engineer and so HTML is a big deal in my house [sad, isn’t it?] Good luck and Happy New year!

When I think that I didn t even know what a blog was since April 2006, me too I made a long way ! and it s getting better and better.

Wow what a cool book – I too am 100% self taught in the way’s of HTML – it’s really not hard once you get the basics down – though I did not have a book or a sister who knew it – so for me it was manditory that I learned – with an on line business! So when I had a question I looked it up on line – low and behold – I had much less Questions – over time – I also have an awesome HTML editor that’s free if you want me to send you the link to where to get it – it makes it SOO easy – and all the code is “clean” too! 🙂
Good luck with bringing in 2007 with HTML – and ask me if you have questions, I am totally “ok” at it – and am always HAPPY to help! 🙂

Thanks for suggesting the book! I’m going to check it out. I know NOTHING about HTML and really need to learn. Good luck unpacking and getting things organized too. I told my husband last night that I swear it takes WEEKS to get the house back to normal after Christmas (he thinks it’s fine, but that’s a man for ya:D).

I am getting a handle on the HTML, now if only I can figure out the PHP stuff, so I can help my co-owner of the mom message board I run. She’s the techie behind the scenes there. Good luck with it!!
Have a great Tuesday!

Learning HTML is a great tackle! I learned it in school (graphic arts major). Now I am woefully left behind with all the new things I need to learn, PHP, CSS, and many, many more. Good luck with the HTML! 🙂
