So tomorrow I’m bringing my baby entourage to an SEO conference in Atlanta Georgia!
Yikes, it’s going to be a long plane ride. Well, nothing compared to going to Italy… this is just practice for that trip. Ugh. I’m not a fan of airplanes, especially when toting tots. But I can’t leave my nursing baby at home! And I am looking forward to the conference… lots to learn!
Julia, Sophia, their nanny and I will embark on our journey south bright and early tomorrow.
I’ve never been to the southern states… so tell me what’s Atlanta like? Do you live there?
crissy says
family and i just moved to atlanta in decatur area, where to go to begin social life and exclusive area, more widespread.
Bridgette says
I am moving to atlanta in two weeks, how is things on the employment part of it

I’m dying to know how your trip went!
Did you like Atlanta? What fun stuff did you guys do?
Kathryn says
Okay – Atlanta may be in the south, but it is definitely a “worldly” city. You will find people of all walks of life (and probably every country) there. It is an international market.
That being said, Sherman didn’t run off all the born and breed southerners! So you will likely find a some southern hospitality still around. Give your time constraints, I’d stick to places and things in the area around your conference. The traffic really can be a nightmare!

I’m in Atlanta! Sure you don’t have time for a Southern Bloggy Meetup?!
Rebekah at babiesabroad says
I lived in Atlanta for 14 years! It’s a great city, expect friendly people and that famous southern hospitality. Traffic will be horrendous, the aquarium is very good, The kids will love exploring centennial park and the fountains are great fun. If you have the stomach for greasy food you have to go to the Varsity it’s a big piece of downtown history! Hmmm, makes me want a chiliburger really bad! Oh and the Atlanta airport is easily one of the best airports and easiest to navigate in the world. Also, just outside Atlanta are some awesome outlets for shopping! You can really load up there and get some awesome deals! I hope you have a great time!

Hot! Weather-wise and culturally. Darn, wish I had known sooner, and I would have made arrangements to drive up and meet you!!
Tiff says
I have been to Atlanta a few times. And loved it. I live in NC . Atlanta is southern charm and fun! Hope you have fun!!!
Karen says
Don’t worry. I’m sure they’ll have good air conditioning and plenty of sweet tea to pass around. 😉
Angela says
The children’s museum is terrific (a must do!), and so is the zoo. The Varsity is great as well, and a frosted orange drink is the best! I live south of the big city, closer to Callaway Gardens, and the butterfly exhibit is fabulous!!!!
It is hot, but I think you have heard that by now!
Hope you have fun!
Grasping for Objectivity in my Subjective Life says
Oh come on everyone. . . don’t scare her!! 😀 It’s hot down here but it’s not unbearable and I promise that you won’t melt. I give you my word.
Jackie says
Welcome to HOTlanta. You will now be entering the hot and humid part of our year, otherwise known as the “dog days of summer.” Some people will try to tell you it’s called that because of some astrological thing with the stars and all, but down here in the south we call them “dog days” because it’s too hot for the dogs to want to even leave the porch!
PS – Come prepared for a little rain as we may be getting some of Fay’s leftover action this way.
Hope you enjoy your stay!
Karen {simply a musing blog} says
I second Heather. It’s very hot this time of year. But it’s a beautiful city and I’m sure some of the native Atlantans (is that even a word? lol) can point you to attractions for the kids. My husband and I go there for business about once a year. Love it.

LOVE SEO! lol I’m a bit of a geek like that. Have fun.

If you like burgers you’ll love The Varsity!

I *LOVE* Atlanta. My husband went to Georgia Tech and I went to Agnes Scott (a women’s college in Decatur). It’s a green city–there are parks, businesses, houses, etc all mixed together so you don’t have a concrete jungle like Dallas or some other big cities I’ve been in. There’s so much to do: history, shopping, culture, food…
One drawback: traffic pretty much sucks. It’s one of the fastest (if not *the* fastest) cities in America. And don’t do MARTA alone or at night.
If you want to visit neat areas then you must see Buckhead, Virginia Highlands, and Decatur (of course)…

Have a safe trip! Atlanta is big, with lots of stuff to do. I don’t live there, but I know people who do & I’ve visited in the past.
MaryBeth says
Looks like you’ve already gotten lots of great suggestions for what to do with the kids and what to expect weather wise… I just wanted to say welcome to Georgia!
Jawan says
“Howdie”, from a Georgia girl! I live just an hour from Atlanta and we love making day trips to explore all the fun things to do there. Many have already mentioned the Coca Cola Museum, the GA Aquarium, and Bicentennial Park….all great places! The one thing I would advise would be to make sure you come prepared for the H-E-A-T. It’s humid and sticky here…go naked! Just kidding….
brandiandboys says
i live in nashville and i’m southern born and bred. expect sweet tea (yum) and lots of humidity!
Happy Mama says
I don’t live there, but my husband and I and our 3 kids drove from Michigan to Florida and back a few months ago. I think it is very pretty. It is so very green but I have never been to Atlanta…I will say this though it is very VERY humid. It was my first trip that far south. We are from upstate Ny so it was a change of scene!
Colleen says
I work at Georgia Tech, which is in Atlanta. If you have time, see the Coke Factory and the visit the Aquarium. Take the MARTA whenever possible, but just mind your surroundings. I’d avoid eating at the Varsity no matter what anyone tells you. We have pretty much anything you’d like to eat and the weather should be nice while you’re here!
Renee aka MekhisMom says
I live in Atlanta. The Children’s Museum is great, the aquarium and I like the Botanical Gardens – they have a great children’s garden.
Laura K says
Ok – I live in a suburb of Atlanta. Must-sees are:
– The Aquarium (get tickets online if you can, they have timed entry to control the “crowds”)
– Stone Mountain
These are great touristy things to do, and both are very impressive. The “Imagine It!” children’s museum is literally a block from the Aquarium, and the World of Coke is between the two. I’ve not been to the WOC since they moved it, or the Children’s museum – but that would make for a full day.
I hate to downplay the zoo – but if you’ve been to either the San Diego or National Zoo in DC, skip it. It may be very disappointing. Other than that – enjoy your trip!!
Sally says
I don’t live there, but I’ve visited. It IS hot, but hey, it’s summer.
Make sure you see Stone Mountain. It’s impressive.
littlesanctuary (Kim) says
I live in metro atlanta. Welcome to southern heat.
Nikowa says
Yes HOT…As in sitting in a sauna fully clothed HOT. (muggy, humid) I HATE the “southern summers” & I can say that…I was born & raised here. TRAFFIC is CRAZY too.
Pamela D. says
Atlanta is nicknamed Hotlanta for a reason 🙂 though it looks like it will stay below 90 degrees F for the next few days.
Grasping for Objectivity in my Subjective Life says
Congratulations on coming to the wonderful south! I live in Birmingham, Alabama which is 2 hours from Atlanta. I love visiting Atlanta, but would hate to live there, due to the traffic and extremely chaotic interstates – so be sure and have your nanny keep the kids good and entertained while you’re driving so you can focus on the road!!
I haven’t been to a lot of the stuff in Atlanta geared around kids, because we go there a lot on dates, but I know that the Zoo and Aquarium are supposed to be fantastic, as is the Coca-Cola center. There are also a couple of great malls – Phelps Plaza and Lenox Square. Much good shopping!!!
As far as food goes, be sure and try to discover southern cooking. Try some fried okra, bar-b-que, sweet tea, grits (for breakfast), and maybe some fried seafood.
Have a GREAT trip!! I hope you love the South!
Rachel
Have a great trip!
Amy says
I’ve never been there, either. I’ve actually scarcely been out of the Pacific Northwest. The furthest east I’ve been in Wyoming, and the furthest south I’ve been in Nevada/California. Yikes. I’ve heard good things about Atlanta, though, from some folks that have been there.
Have fun, though!
Mommy Magee says
Hey! Atlanta is a fun and busy city! There’s lots to see and do and lots of shopping. If you have extra time and love gardening, there is a very very cool garden called Callaway. It’s just outside of Atlanta… here’s the link http://www.callawaygardens.com/ Not sure if they have this right now but they had an indoor butterfly exhibit when I went 10 years ago that was so cool!
Hope your trip goes well. Oh and if you are going to a southern state, and find a resturant that brews their own, order the sunripened sweet tea. Yum!
Heather says
It’s Hot. But if you get a chance, the girls might like the Aquarium.
And lots to see at the Olympic Park. 😀
