How to Bring Hygge into your Daily Life

Have you been hearing this word “hygge” and wondered what it means? Hygge (pronounced “HUE-gah”) is a Danish word that is used to acknowledge a feeling or moment as cozy, charming or special. The hygge lifestyle of cozy and simple living has become a growing trend here in North America.

How To Bring Hygge Into Your Daily Life

I think most moms would agree that we all could use a little hygge in our daily lives.

While we may sometimes tend to live this way during the winter months by accident, intentionally slowing down and enjoying the simple life can have significant benefits for you and your family.

Here is how you can bring hygge into your daily life…

Spend time reading each day

Make reading a part of your daily routine. Personally, I love starting my day with some light reading. Grab your favorite book and perhaps a warm cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy a good read for a few minutes each day. Get up an extra 15 minutes before your kids wake up if you need to, or take some time before bed to read.

Bring nature indoors

One of the key parts of a hygge lifestyle is reconnecting with nature. A great way to do this is by bringing some of the outdoors inside to enjoy all day long. You can do this by purchasing some plants for your home, crafting with outdoor materials, or doing crafts with your kids from the things you find outdoors. These make great home decor pieces for your home and add a touch of rustic decor.

Unplug for a few minutes each day

In today’s digital age, it can be tough to unplug from daily life. This can be especially challenging if you work on a computer all day. Take time each day to disconnect from your devices, and enjoy time with friends and family without the distractions of technology.

Get in the kitchen and bake something

When was the last time you made something from scratch? It’s been awhile for me, and something I’ve meant to start again. Instead of buying something from your local bakery or picking up something from the store, why not make it! Homemade bread, muffins, and baked goods taste so much better when they’re made from scratch.

Go for a walk

Plan time either before or after dinner and go for a walk with your family. You don’t have to go on a long hike, even a walk around your neighborhood will do. This can be a great way to bond as a family and get a little bit of exercise while you’re at it.

Living a hygge lifestyle will not only benefit you during the winter months, but as you can see, this is a trend you can enjoy all year round as well. Take the time to embrace cozy living, and slow down and enjoy life for just a few extra seconds each day.

Before, this post, I’d never heard of the term “hygge” but the philosophy seems pretty solid. We try to go for a walk as a family a few days a week and unplug for a few hours in the evening.
