As a mom, I spend all year doing the things I have to do with my kids and I like taking the extra time during the holidays to do the things I want to do with them. That usually means baking something extra special or surprising the kids with a breakfast made with love in the form of *Step 1*

Gather your favorite pretzel snacks. The large pretzel rods and twists work well for this sweet project but you can definitely dip the small sticks and twists too for a mini treat.

*Step 2*

Candy melts are a great product for a non-chocolate flavor and come ready in fun holiday colors like red, white and pink. When melted the candy, use a microwave-safe bowl and add 2 tablespoons of vegetable shortening to about a cup of candy melts. Microwave the melts in 30 second intervals, stirring each time in between until the melts are smooth and creamy.

*Step 3*

Place a large sheet of wax paper over a hard surface. Dip and cover each pretzel covering about a third of the surface. Tap the pretzel on the side of the bowl to remove excess candy. If your bowl is too small, use a spoon to pour the candy melts over the pretzels (necessary for the rods).

<a

I don’t know who sent them to us, but I only know that they were always there.

Nuts and cheeses and candies and big baskets with bows became something that symbolized the holidays for me. After I left home and eventually got married, we had a gift basket dry spell. I missed those baskets full of sweet, salty, and savory treats.

The year that my dad sent a gift basket to us was such an exciting, nostalgic one for me, and I loved sharing that holiday memory and tradition with my kids. Now, we get gift baskets every year (though often I just get them for myself).

We recently had a huge gift basket delivered to our door from Wine Country Gift Baskets, and the kids were especially excited when we opened it. Inside was a little bit of everything – chocolates, crackers, popcorn, etc. The kids and I (and Dad, too) loved tearing through the boxes and trying a little bit of everything.

<a

I’ve had my excuses. For several years it was being out of town Thanksgiving weekend and then having dress rehearsals and a church Christmas musical that took up the first weekend of December, and then visiting family at Christmas that often made me think “What’s the point?”

Last year all we managed to decorate the mantle with stockings and lights, but because we left our home in Connecticut a week before Christmas to move back to Houston, that was all we could — or wanted to — do.

<a

I even shopped for some more lights and garland and got the mantle done on Saturday morning.

Saturday afternoon we bought our tree, Houston-style. In Connecticut we did the New England thing and cut down our own tree at a family-owned tree farm. Here we walked the aisles of Lowe’s and bought one of the first ones we saw (at a great price — $30).

how to have your best Thanksgiving ever. I was ready. Pumped. Excited to be heading into the holiday season again.

“Where did the time go?”

Now I find myself staring at the calendar in horror. How could Thanksgiving be a mere 2 days away? Not only am I hosting yet another Thanksgiving dinner at my house (with all the trimmings, of course), but somehow I was the lucky host of book club this month – on Monday night.

Monday afternoon I headed to the grocery store when I really needed to be cleaning my house and baking treats for book club. Luckily, I went to the store with a list and thank goodness I cook the same things year after year for Thanksgiving dinner. I know exactly what I need at the store.

My house may not be beautifully decorated for Thanksgiving, I *may* have stuffed extra toys and unfolded laundry into the storage room to hide some of my mess before all of my guests showed up for book club, and I may not have my blog posts scheduled ahead so that I can take some time off for the holiday later this week.

Focusing on what’s important

But I have a refrigerator full of food for Thanksgiving, recipes are out, and the menu is decided. Last night’s Pumpkin Pudding Cake was a hit (and the house smelled wonderful when my guests arrived). I spent quality time with my friends, discussing a great book (Bel Canto) and my kids were good sports about letting a bunch of women act like kids as we giggled and chatted the night away.

And most of all? I am thankful. Thankful that I am surrounded by friends and family this week, that we have an abundance of good food, and that I have work to keep me busy. It reminds me that I have a job. And those are greater blessings than I could ever hope for.

So despite the stress of tackling so much this week, I have decided to simply enjoy this week of Thanksgiving.

Be thankful.

Calling All Tacklers!

We’re looking for YOU – guest bloggers to post about your own tackles right here. In this past week, I’ve heard about this book twice, and I must say….I am intrigued. Here’s what I found when I was checking in with our sister sites this week:

<a

Are you in?

Perhaps you are shaking your head at the mere mention of Christmas here the week before Thanksgiving! But that’s the point. This book not only gives you guidance about setting goals for the holiday you want (sticking to a budget, saying no to so many activities, focusing more on the religious meaning etc), but Christie also encourages you to use the true spirit of Thanksgiving to usher in the Christmas season. What’s more, the book also takes you all the way into the New Year.

The book contains it all. The “Less is More” chapter not only deals with busyness, but spending and overeating. Does that not sum it up?

<a

Target’s Executive Vice President told her they will actually be hiring 5-10% more employees than last year.
<p

These will vary depending on the age of your children but it is wise to have a small tub with a lid for each child that contains activities they will enjoy.

Items to include in the car for toddlers & preschoolers:

Books

Coloring books (only 3 crayons & watch them in extreme heat)

Quiet toys- doll or action figure

Stickers (might end up on car- vinegar & baby oil will get off any adhesive left behind. Sometimes ten minutes silence is worth the clean up later.).

Legos

Movie (If you have DVD player in car- if not, get one. Movies are perfect for long car rides. Must have strict rules, only watch movies during long trips, that way it is a special treat, and not the norm.).

Car bingo

Snacks

Encourage older children to play additional car games together (20 questions, what animal am I, Name the healthy food- see hybrid time)

I suggest packing in your luggage new time filling activities for the journey home.
