Interview with Heather from “The Spohrs Are Multiplying…”

I started blogging as a way to keep my family and friends informed on my pregnancy and my daughter’s health. But now I look at it as a diary to my daughter. She is a tough little baby and I want her to be able to have a journal of everything she went through. Hopefully her life won’t ever be so tough again!

I actually had another blog that I started in 2002, where I wrote about my life as a single party girl, meeting my husband, and getting transferred across the country for my job. That blog really came to a close once I was married and became pregnant, so I started this one in June of 2007.

I blog about the latest goings on in my life. Sometimes it’s serious stuff, like my daughter’s health or the death of another NICU baby, and sometimes it’s fun stuff like going to a baseball game or buying clothes! Life with a new baby is always interesting, so it provides a lot of material!

I have a weakness for mom blogs, (especially ones that had babies in the NICU), although I do have other blogs in my daily rotation!

Don’t feel pressure to write long, involved posts - that will inevitably lead to burn out. Short posts are always good, and it’s okay to skip a day or two of blogging! The world won’t end. If you want comments, you have to leave them for others. Make sure you have an “about” page so new readers know what your story is. Use tags and categories so visitors can catch up on certain topics. And most of all, make sure you’re writing about something you love!!!

YES!!! I have made some very good internet friends through comments. I joke with my husband that comments are like caffeine - totally addicting and I can’t get enough!

My whole family reads my blog, and a lot of my friends and co-workers do, too. It sometimes impacts how candid I would like to be. I know better than to talk about my job, but sometimes I’d like to complain about it in general. And, I have to be sure not to scare people when I talk about my daughter’s health. Not long ago I fleetingly mentioned that she wasn’t gaining weight and HO-LY CRAP did my parents and in-law freak out.

I usually blog in the evenings after my daughter has gone to bed. I’ve been known to blog via blackberry from such exciting locations as the emergency room or traffic jams, though. I try not to blog from work since I don’t want to get fired!!

I spend about an hour a day on my blog. I spend WAY too much time reading other blogs!!! Hours and hours.

I started my other blog way before I’d heard the term “Blogging.” I remember seeing a story about this wacky knew concept of blogging and I thought, hey, I already do that.

Hmm…probably the first blog I ever read with regularity was Plain Jane. I loved how candid she was and she makes me laugh with every entry. She would think this is ridiculous, but I kind of want to be her.

My daughter and my husband (and even my dog) are my biggest inspirations in life. Without them, I wouldn’t have any happiness - or anything to write about!!!!!

I write for http://www.lamomsblog.com, http://www.blognosh.com, and http://mommy411.org. I help my husband with his website, http://www.hanginemup.com and his daddy blog, http://thenewbornidentity.com.

Blogging has forced me to be more positive. Because I know others are reading what I write, I am always looking for the bright side. No one wants to read about a pity party, you know? So when I write about yet another hospitalization for my daughter, I try to put a good spin on it, and then…what do you know! I actually believe it!
Blogging has touched my life in a way I never thought possible. So many people have reached out to us because of my daughter, and it has shown me that there are amazingly kind and decent people out there. I really care about my Internet friends. I celebrate their accomplishments and cry at their defeats.
