Interview with Annette Lyon from “The Lyon’s Tale”
“The Lyon’s Tale”

Blogging is a way for me to get down some of the fun bits that are flitting around my brain. Sometimes it’s about motherhood. Other times it’s things readers are asking about the writing process (like how no, the writer doesn’t get to pick their own title or cover). And sometimes it’s issues I’m just thinking about, am excited about, or want to put down on cyber “paper.”
It’s always exciting to get comments from other bloggers and see that what I’ve said touched a chord with them. Moms everywhere really do feel the same things. We stick together, and blogs are a great way to do that.

I’ve been at it since the summer of 2006, which isn’t all that long, but I’ve been having a ball with it.

Silly things my kids do, like the time my 7-year-old collected family hair samples when I cut everyone’s hair–and then she stacked them up in Tuppeware containers.
Or writing stuff, like the excitement of getting my fifth novel accepted. (No, the excitement doesn’t ever get any less.)
Basically, anything that’s meaningful in my life as a mom or as a writer.

The blogs I read are (no surprise) mom blogs and writer blogs, and some are just plain fun, humorous ones. A couple of my favorites (because I could make a long, obnoxious list):

Update often. If a reader has checked back every week for a month and you don’t have a new post, eventually they’ll stop coming back.
And have fun; don’t worry about it sounding smart or perfect. Blogging isn’t supposed to be Nobel prize-winning literature.

Absolutely! I’ve “met” some fun friends through comment trails, people who live hundreds of miles away who share common interests. It’s been wonderful.

I have some family who live overseas, and it’s been nice to be able to have them read the blog and share a part of my life with them that they might not be able to otherwise see. I know of a couple of high school friends who read my blog at times as well.

Usually during the school day in my home office–when three of my four little ones are gone and aren’t vying for my attention!

I’ll often read blogs a couple of days a week, checking my favorites to see if they’ve been updated. I’ll update my blog a couple of times a week at least, sometimes more, depending on my own editorial schedule and whether I have some blogging idea that just has to be typed out!

In Writer’s Digest magazine, and at first, the idea scared me. I assumed it would be difficult. How wrong I was! It’s been a great (and easy!) adventure.

Books, my children, other blogs, and CHOCOLATE.

I do some consulting for The Utah Chocolate Show (tough job, but somebody has to do it).

I’ve definitely been encouraged in several areas, motherhood being one of them. “Meeting” new cyber friends who genuinely care about and support one another has been so rewarding.
