Interview with Linda from “Are We There Yet?? The Journeys of a Single, Working Mom”

“Are We There Yet?? The Journeys of a Single, Working Mom”

I blog because I’m one of those people who always writes Letters to the Editor and thinks they have something to say that other people might want to hear about (but maybe really don’t!). I have always enjoyed writing but have never had the discipline to sit down and try to write a book (I am absolutely horrible at dialogue!) and blogging gives me an outlet for my creative side. Also, blogging gives me the opportunity to occasionally climb up on my soapbox and give recognition to those things that I think are important or perhaps decry that which I think just isn’t right.

I initially started blogging on LiveJournal with my blog It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times back in May of 2004 but it was mostly just an on-line diary of sorts for me as I’m pretty sure that no one ever read it! Last July, I was invited to be part of the new on-line blogging community at The Norwich Bulletin and that is when I began my current blog on Blogger.

When I began blogging for The Bulletin, I had to tell them what my “topic” would be and that is my life as a single, working Mom and the ups and downs of said life. In addition to that is my job as a 911 dispatcher so I also write about that. I do go “off” topic sometimes but I try to tie it all together if at all possible!

I have a long list of favorite blogs that are listed on my blogroll that I try to get to everyday if at all possible. I never knew that there were so many great people out there in the “Blogosphere” when I first started this but I have rapidly found that there are so many that I could spend the entire day reading them and never get enough!

I always think it’s kind of neat when someone tells me “I read your blog everyday” even if they have never once posted a comment. I know I have several cousins who are regular readers and my favorite Aunt is a faithful follower (she then goes and tells my Mom about some of the things I’ve written about so I have to watch it!). There are people at work who read, too, on a regular basis though they only lurk and don’t comment.

I probably spend WAY too much time reading and writing at this point. The Bulletin has requested that we update our blogs regularly, at least four to five times per week, but I try to write every day if possible as I know that I have daily visitors. I hate to disappoint my “fans” by not writing something new!

An on-line friend of mine first got me started on LiveJournal and, as someone who used to journal all the time when I was younger, it seemed like a great idea. My handwriting is absolutely horrible so to be able to type a journal and have it saved permanently really appealed to me. And it’s really nice to have an audience now, too

One of the things that inspires me in my writing is the humor that can be found in everyday life. One of my regular readers has told me that I come across as a combination Erma Bombeck - Minnie Pearl - Franklin Roosevelt Fireside Chat sort of writer. I took that as a compliment!
