Interview with from “Spina Bifida Moms - Sweetie and Me”
“Spina Bifida Moms - Sweetie and Me”

I started my blog as a sort of reference for other disabled women out there who were looking to start families or who already were moms. I have the birth defect spina bifida, and when my husband and I were thinking of starting a family, we found very little information available regarding disabled women going through pregnancies and raising children. So, when my daughter was almost 2 1/2 years old, it finally hit me that I could blog about my experiences and hopefully be both useful and entertaining to disabled women, healthy women, and just about anyone who cared to drop by.

I’ve been blogging since April, 2005.

Oh, you know. Daily life experiences. Fun stuff, things I worry about, my impressions on how I feel my disability affecting - or not - the growth and development of my daughter. I also post special weekly features. Every Monday I write a post based on the http://mamasaysom.com theme word of the week. And every Saturday I post my Sweetie Saturday entry about some of the funny and cute things my daughter has recently said.

Yes! I love to hear from commenters! Although it seems people can be somewhat shy on my site. Don’t be shy! Let me know what you think and I’ll write back.

My brother and sister-in-law, who live in Texas, are both regular followers of mine. And I just found out that one of my other sisters-in-law, my husband’s sister, reads me all the time. More and more I’m hearing from friends, family and even co-workers, “Oh, I read your blog all the time! It’s great!”. So that’s really exciting. Kind of surreal, actually. But really, reallly wonderful too.

I blog about 4 times a week - Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays and Saturdays. Our laptop is set up right in our main living space, so I can pretty much blog whenever I need to and still be very near Sweetie in case she needs my help or attention.

My husband and his friend had started a blog together maybe about 2 years ago or so. Hubby never talked much about it, but I knew he was having fun with whatever it was. Then one day, close to Mother’s Day of 2005, we went to the book store and I picked up a copy of You Can Do It! - The Merit Badge Handbook for Grown Up Girls. The book talked about improving your life and tackling projects and dreams you’ve always wanted to do. One of which was “start your own website”. Instantly it struck me that I could blog. Hubby could set me up real easy, teach me the little I needed to know, and I’d be on my way. By that afternoon, I had my first 3 posts already up.

My daughter. Seeing her live life to the fullest and not let things get in her way. And other women. Daring to dream and be all that you wish for yourself - despite any limitations - physical or otherwise - that you have or feel you have. Helping others be their best and reach their goals.
