Between a Rock and a Far Place

Posted By Carol

Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. Psalm 31:3 NIV

“Mommy this does not work!” My thoughts scattered as Faith waltzed into my bedroom in a huff, her hands holding a tiny rock wrapped in white cloth tied with a green satin ribbon. She yanked at the ribbon in hopes of uncovering the rock inside. “What do you mean it doesn’t work,” I questioned. “Well,” she inhaled, “this is a prayer rock that you are supposed to lay on. I put it right on my head and my mouth is not praying.” She held the small rock to her four-year-old temple. “See? It doesn’t make me pray.” She was aghast.

After stifling my giggles, I gently explained that the rock would not make you pray but reminded you to pray. She stomped and insisted I didn’t know what I was talking about and told me she was sure of it. She continued her disbelief until I read aloud the directions tied to the rock. “Oh,” she said and walked away matter of factly. I followed her into her room and watched as she carefully tucked the rock under her pillow.

I wonder how many times I act the same way. How often do I approach God miffed and tell Him that something is not working the way I know it should? Since, of course, I know everything. At least that is the attitude I give to God sometimes. During those feet-stomping times, God gently shows me The Word. I read the directions He supplied so long ago and realize they still apply today. To me. I, too, manage a humbled, “Oh.” Only I don’t walk away so matter of factly. And I carefully tuck His Word into a far place in my heart.

Oh God, help me not to be self-centered. Forgive me when I am so full of myself that I think I know it all. Supply me with your abundant mercy and grace. Help me to remember to that You alone have all the answers. You alone are worthy to be praised. Amen.

I have a prayer rock that was given to me years ago. It has a speical place in my house. Of course, I’m afraid to “discard” it, how would I remember to pray!?
