Travailing Prayer

Posted By Kathleen

Travailing Prayer isn’t something that you can muster up on your own; only God births travail. Lately I have found myself in great times of travail over my children, especially over my “prodigals”. Like many Christian parents I know I am not alone in this area. It is an area that I find very painful. I really just don’t get it, but maybe I am not supposed to. I do want my children to have their own faith in the Lord, not my faith.

I see many children grow up with their parent’s faith and when they leave home they become extremely rebellious and confused because they don’t have a personal relationship with Christ, they have been living on their parents faith. I can honestly say that my kids didn’t become really rebellious in the areas most people think of as rebellion (drugs, alcohol, etc.) but they are looking, searching for the Lord in their own way and at times it seems they are looking in all the wrong places, justifying their lifestyle or rationalizing bad decisions. As a parent, I pray, I travail on their behalf.

I want to help them but they are adults and need to develop their own faith in God, their own relationship with God and I know once found, they will be the stronger for it. I have also been travailing over issues that are plaguing our nation. God puts different kinds of burdens on different people.

At times when I go to certain blogs, the Lord may have me pray over that person or their child who needs prayer.

Travail: to birth or a birthing anointing (without travail we will not birth anything); to bear, to have a conception and then deliver it; to be troubled. To toil and writhe in pain; to feel a weight upon you. It is a type of burden bearing. Lamentations 3: 12 & 13 says: “He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrow. He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver.”

We can mistake travail for depression. You may not know what the travail is about until you yield to it. God is calling people to travail in prayer: “The Lord will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal…” Isaiah 42:13-14. Elijah travailed for the birthing of rain, 1 Kings 18: 41-45.

Travail brings forth the very purpose of God, Romans 8:22-26. Jesus travailed in the Garden of Gethsemane: “And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground” Luke 22: 44. This travail that Jesus experienced was prophesied in Isaiah 53:11. The travailing prayers of Jesus are mentioned in Hebrews 5:7. What we must remember is that Jesus was travailing for us, on our behalf. Can we do less? When you enter into travailing prayer, stay with it until the burden is lifted because there is something God wants to birth. “I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. A woman giving birth to a child has pain… but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that the child is born into the world” John 16:20-21.

This week many churches across the nation are asking their people to pray and fast for our nation. I do believe that God is calling his children to travail more now than ever before. Be alert, heed God’s call and pray without ceasing.

“We can mistake travail for depression”. That really hit me Katherine, but looking back over certain times that really, really clicks.

Very true. Our church is about to begin our 30 days of prayer and fasting. Each person will choose one day, so 30 members will fast and pray one day during the month

Thank you for this! I haven’t heard the term “travailing prayer” for a long time–maybe I never heard it like this? But I totally agree with what you said: “without travail, we will not birth anything.” In a literal sense…from my recent experience giving birth, I was even 10 centimeters dilated but feeling so relaxed that I couldn’t push effectively. It wasn’t until I was travailing (and boy, was I!) that my son was born. The application to prayer, especially for our children, is very good. I find it much easier to travail in prayer for them than I do for anyone or anything else. I feel like sometimes I’ve almost given up on our nation, so it’s harder for me to travail in prayer about that. I need to expand this travailing prayer to more than just my immediate family.

Katherine, wow. I agree with you. I also liked what you shared about our children. We have four children, but our oldest just turned 18. I know she has a relationship with Christ and she spends time with Him daily, but tonight we ran into a situation and I was concerned that she would make a wrong choice. She’ll be leaving for college in the fall and I know that I have to trust that her relationship with Christ is growing and developing and that He’ll guide her in all of her decision. Even when we can’t be there. God has also really put it on my heart to fast at least one day a week for her while she’s away this first year. This writing is really encouraging to me. Thank you!

    Kathleen,

Excellent post. I think often, we as believers, need to feel the burden. You are right it is not depression but a heaviness in the soul. Great post.

Praise Jesus finally someone who comes out and speaks only truth!!
It saddens me that many in church still so not have an understanding of the power of travail many think that it is evil and that the person needs to be delivered travailing in the spirit brings healing, deliverance, it pulls back the forces and brings in the light it truly sets the captives free Praise god!!
The father has had me to travail several times a couple times at Panera Bread. I met a young girl at IHOP restaraunt and gave her a word and just gave her my phone number in case she had any questions or needed to talk to anyone she called me and sounded desperate so I met her at panera bread, it was around lunch time and as we were standing in line (the place was crowded with people) I went into major travail can you imagine we went to sit down and the first thing I wanted to do was to go ,,,,hmmmm well that what I wanted to do, so as we got up to go to the door it was like the angel of the lord prevented me from going anywhere so I went back to sit down, as I was travailing I went down on my knees and it was really amazing it was like noone even heard me travail noone looked,,, nothing,,,(that is what pam had stated it was amazing) noone came over to say is everything ok,,,and then pam said she was a little scared and I told her not to leave that this was the lords will and so I told her to just open up the bible and she did it landed on psalms 91(King James, I had two bibles with me one king james and one Jewish total bible we also opened up the other one and it landed on psalms 91 as well .
I truly know what it means to be under the wings of the almighty and protected by his feathers!!
The spirit of the lord impressed it on my heart that he wants healing in the market place.

Ive learned that obedience takes you higher in the things of god he increased you so if you ever go into travail in public do not look at thier faces just be obedient.

When we walked out of panera bread three hours later Pam looked across the street and started crying she said Renae you dont know this but I wear glasses I can actually see the signs across the street before I could not,
Praise god!! also she stated that she was on a medication and it was pretty serious she said that she was suppose to eat somethign in the morning but had forgotten to and she hadnt eaten anything at all, she said that her doctor the week prior said that it was going to get worse as time went on because she had been sent to the hospital several times and almost lost her life, she also said that as we were sitting in the panera bread it felt like she could see everything clearer I said what do you mean by that and she said that she could actually feel peoples pain and other sensations in the restaraunt.
by the time pam was done telling me in the parking lot all of the ailments that the lord had healed her of she had already called her family I was able to talk to her mother who confirmed her illnesses and I praised god for her healing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I give him all the praise and all the glory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im telling everyone this story to lift up the name of Jesus, travail is powerful for the kingdom of heaven so please submit and see and behold the glory of the lord.

    Bondservant of Jesus Christ,
    Renae

Yesterday I was looking for a teaching on travailing.I have experienced this at times and did yesterday morning during prayer at Bible study. I would like to know more about it. When I travail I get very loud. Is it different for everyone? Also doesn’t seem like I can just decide to travail and it happens…I would appreciate a better understanding on this subject….Thank you! Roberta
