Orange, crispy, fluffy, cheesy, yummy! These are my thoughts on cheese puffs. They seem so harmless. My Memaw used to say, “They’re just cheese and air!” So why wouldn’t I let my three-year-old have a bowl while I was cooking dinner? I knew they would taste good. I was tempted to share a bowl with her. But, I was preparing one of her favorite dinners. We did NOT need a snack before supper.
But…have you ever tried to reason with a three-year-old? It was a challenge. I tried just flat out telling her that we would be eating her favorite homemade mini pizzas in a matter of minutes. But time doesn’t mean much to a three-year-old. They have no concept. I tried the allure of a brand new-ish box of crayons and fresh, clean paper. No deal. Then I decided the “stand firm” technique and told her, “NO, and no more discussion.” Strike three for me. She stood in the middle of the kitchen and screamed “Cheese Puffs, Cheese Puffs, Cheese Puffs…” You get the idea. She just couldn’t wait.
I often have the same problem with waiting. My morning prayers are not answered by late afternoon and I’m left wondering if God forgot about me. I just can’t wait. I try to come up with my own solutions, being hungry for an answer. They are just a snack. I’m still hungry. God tries to remind me of the wonderful blessings around me and tells me to wait. But I’m not satisfied to do so. I have no concept of His time. I have never stood in the middle of church and chanted “new job, new job, new job” while stomping my feet. But I have pitched quite a few temper tantrums in my heart. If only I would wait for God, he is preparing my favorite meal – one that will satisfy me completely. But I must wait. Sigh. Next time, I’ll be a little more understanding with my three-year-old and a little more mature with my God.
In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation. Psalm 5:3
Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. Psalm 27:14
I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. Psalm 40:1
Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! Isaiah 30:18

Thanks for the awesome devotion on waiting! This is one area I am asking the Lord to work on in my life! The verses you gave I am going to memorize and apply to my heart! Thank you for being an instrument of teaching to me! God Bless!
how true! I’ve got a 4 in 4 years, so I understand this concept well!
Thanks for the lesson. I am trying to be patient.
Excellent lesson. I love the simplicity of this illustration. Thanks so much!
Help us, Lord and forgive us for our impatience and lack of trust at times. Grow and mature us, in Jesus’ name.
Carole,
Thank you for this ministering lesson. Even in the most difficult times - financial crisis, family crisis, health crisis, God is there and will provide. He has instructed us not to be anxious, worrisome or overly concerned for anything, but instead bring everything to Him in prayer and thanksgiving. He has promised us His peace, which passes all understanding. Philippians 4:6-7
Wait upon the Lord…and renew your strength. This was so refreshing. I am still learning to wait. I have come a long way but still have a way to go. God Bless!
