My friend Barb, from a Chelsea Morning fame, has just returned from visiting her mom and brothers. She wrote a lovely post but at the end she said something that really jumped out at me. Her last sentence was “Family is everything. And I never, ever plan to forget that.” Oh, how I agree. My own three kids have been gone for three days at a youth conference and I can hardly wait for them to walk in the door. I missed them terribly. Yes, I enjoyed the peace and quiet you get from nobody else being in the house, but I missed their presence in my day. I missed hearing about how their day went, about the things that made them happy and I missed them sharing with me their cares and concerns. I missed the back and forth dialogue that is so much a part of my day when they are all here. I missed their laughter and rambunctiousness.
Our family here on earth is a reflection of a spiritual truth. God has a family, too. He is our Father and we, as believers, are His children. Just as I missed my children this weekend, He also misses us when He doesn’t hear from us. He desires our presence with Him daily. He wants us to talk with Him. He wants to hear about our cares and concerns, He wants to hear about the good parts of our day and our laughter and joy. He enjoys when we spend time with Him, just on our own. And as I enjoy my immediate family and my extended family together, God’s father heart also enjoys when His children meet together and enjoy each other and partake of His presence. It’s an exciting thing to think that God just enjoys being with you because you are His child and part of His family.
Take the time this week to “visit” with your Heavenly Father. Enjoy His presence. Converse back and forth with Him. He loves to hear from you and enjoys your presence.
“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty”
2 Corinthians 6:18

If only the world could realize just how important and precious family is. God created family. When Jesus came to earth he blessed him with family, a complete family and his spirit lived amongst them as Holy Spirit lives among us. What a fabulous reminder Susanne. I am sure your children will be so excited to see you as well! God Bless!
Yes, God is a God of relationships, of family. My pastor pointed out recently that God instituted the family before He instituted the church… it is important to Him.
Great post!
Thanks for this great post and reminder. A lovely illustration of our Heavenly Father.
I wish my whole family felt that way. I’m glad to know that as the Family of God, we’ll all finally get to meet each other when He brings us all ‘home’.
Yes, Susanne, and no matter how much time we spend with Him, He never tires of us, even when we act up and even if we throw a temper tantrum. :0)
Susanne, I really feel like you were meant to write a women’s devotional - you have such a calm, sure voice in your theological writing. Lovely!
Great post Susanne!
