Be Still My Heart

1 Kings 19:11-12 (NIV)
The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

Great and powerful wind…earthquake…fire…these forces of nature live at my house in the form of three boys.

My cerebral palsy child wraps his hands firmly around the neck of his bipolar brother. The brother kicks, screams and fights back. My Asperger’s son stands beside me babbling incessantly about diesel locomotives. The volume of his voice almost drowns the blood curdling cries of the other two. The clothes dryer buzzes at the moment I notice the dog has eaten one-third of a library book. Hurriedly, I end my telephone conversation. Did I just agree to chaperone the home school association’s skating party…tonight?

Does this sound familiar to you? Chances are the specifics are different -maybe you don’t have children- but harried scenarios are a part of everyone’s life. It comes at home, work or school. It strikes while shopping. No place is a guaranteed refuge. No place…except the heart which loves and submits to God…

Job 22:21 (NIV)
21 “Submit to God and be at peace with him;
in this way prosperity will come to you.

How are we to be still and listen quietly for God to speak to us in the midst of the winds, earthquakes and fires of daily life.? The above passage from Job pretty much says it like Nike…”just do it”. We must submit to Him. We must stop and pray asking Christ to intercede in these times of hurriedness, frustration and stress. The quietness must come from within, especially when we are outwardly surrounded by chaos. We need to consciously say, “Be still my heart and listen for His gentle whisper”.

Lord, in the daily hurriedness of my life help me to stop, close my eyes, breathe deeply, pray and wait patiently for the calmness which only You can provide.

    I so feel you and hear where you are coming from. I have an aspie too and probably even two of them. People always seem to ask “How do you do it?” and I just say “By the grace of Jesus Christ!” I KNOW what the still, small moments are and I cherish them!

    God bless,
    Sallie

    Ladies, while reminding myself, it’s good to hear God helped me to remind others. Now it’s chaotic dinnertime here, and I am going to breathe deeply and pray. :)

    Oh I love this post, particularly in relationship to your post about obedience. Obedience requires patience, often, and patience is a rare commodity, in this hustle-bustle world. Thanks for the reminder to slow down, be still, and breathe…
