Who Are You?

Posted By Elisa

Who are you? How would others describe you? Do you define yourself by who you are or rather by what you do?

Every once in a while it is good for us to take a short break with the Lord and really answer these questions. It is so easy to get caught up with all our responsibilities that we forget to consider the reason behind why we do what we do. We often forget who we are, as our identity morphs into a description of the people we care for and the tasks that we accomplish.

Pretend you’ve just arrived at your friend’s home for coffee and there happens to be some gals from her neighborhood that you have never met. Introductions have taken place and now it is your turn to share a bit more about yourself. Where do you start? Do you tell them you’re a mommy or a wife? Do you explain that you’re divorced or in the process of adoption? Do you begin sharing about your latest scrapbook adventure or unfold the details of your latest business trip?

What we share with others usually reveals how we identify ourselves and also what we deem are the most important details of our lives. As a Christian, however, our identity is about much more than whom we care for and what we accomplish. God through His Word defines our identity; it exists whether or not we have taken hold of it. But it is up to us to choose to believe it as unshakeable truth.

For just a moment, pretend to be back at your friend’s house about to enjoy a sip of coffee, but God suddenly pops in and explains that it is His turn to introduce you to the neighbors. This is just a glimpse of what He would say about you…

    • I chose her before the creation of the world. Ephesians 1:4, 11
    • She is MY child. John 1:12, Romans 8:14-15
    • She is Christ’s friend. John 15:15
    • She is MY workmanship. Ephesians 2:10
    • She is MY coworker. 2 Corinthians 6:1
    • She is chosen and appointed by MY son, Jesus Christ, to bear His fruit. John 15:16
    • She is forgiven. Matthew 26:28, Ephesians 1:7
    • She is sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13
    • She is a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17
    • She is alive with Christ. Ephesians 2:5
    • She is blessed with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places. Ephesians 1:3
    • She is set free. Romans 8:2, John 8:32
    • She is victorious through the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57

Can you take hold of this identity? This is indeed how God sees you. He doesn’t describe you as mom or CEO. He isn’t concerned with the number of items you’ve crossed off your to-do list or how many emails you’ve emptied from your inbox. No. God knows who you are and what you are. He defines you by His character and what He offers you. Can you accept? Will you allow it to transform your life today?

Heavenly Father, thank you for determining our identity. You have given us the opportunity to experience all these things when we commit our lives to you and accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It is a price paid highly by you, O Sovereign God, at the cost of your Son’s life on the cross. We give you thanks and praise for this wonderful gift. Help us to take hold of our identity in Christ today.

What is the most difficult verse from the list above for you to believe about yourself? What one most accurately describes how you see yourself today? How do you think God would work in your life if you chose to memorize these verses? There’s a challenge I need to take hold of, too!

I guess the most difficult to take in is that I was chosen - I mean, why chose me?? But that is also the most empowering verse. I heard Joyce Meyer say recently we need to remember this verse, Jesus chose us even though He knew the mistakes we would make, He still chose us. This is very freeing.

This was a great post and I’m going to copy down those verses, thanks. Blessings.

    Powerful! Powerful! Powerful!

There was a time in my life that I could not accept any of these verses….but, thankfully, after studying the character of God in a Bible Study…I began to focus more on Him: His grace, His mercy, His Love….and less on me–which allowed me to begin to appreciate who I am in Him. It really isn’t all about me….it’s about who He says He was, is, and always will be! And that He loves ME! Amazing! Not only did He create us, He loves us, giving us purpose and provision.

The verses you selected made me smile! Thanks for the reminder that although the things that we DO are very important…it is who we are in Him that will matter for eternity.

Oh, ladies! I am so glad God used this post to encourage you and challenge you in grasping your identity in Christ. It is still an exercise for me! The one verse I am just beginning to get a picture of is “She is victorious through the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57″. That’s the one I need to memorize for all spiritual battles!

    Goodnight and blessings, gals!

  8. OK…this will be my study for tomorrow morning. Thank you for this.
I would have to say that I have not a problem with any of them. I was on this discovery journey for some years and I can say now that although I have not arrived, I know that God sees me just as you described.
