I think there is nothing that lights up the heart of a mom than a simple gift from her child. How many of us who are moms can remember the times when we’ve had a rough day and one of our children comes up to us, and presents us with that hand drawn picture that now sits on your fridge or wall. Or that big spontaneous wrapping of little arms around your legs or a kiss planted on your hand for no reason at all, given as they were running by on their way to another adventure, or that offering of a hunk of banana or cheerio squished in that little fist but extended with the most charming of smiles. Or those four little words that are like music to your ears, “I love you, Mommy”. Or that elusive hug from your teenager, just out of the blue with a hurried, whispered, “Thanks, Mom” or “Love ya, Mom”. Ahh it can take me from a mediocre day to soaring in heart and walking with a skip in my step.
Oh how our hearts and spirits are lifted. The feeling of being appreciated and loved by our children. That gift of love that was spontaneously and freely given, not because they were told they had to, but given because the feeling overwhelmed them, and they just had to put a physical, tangible expression to the more wispy feeling inside. There is nothing like it.
Now I’m going to make a stretch here and say it got me thinking that the Father heart of God must feel the same way with us. What joy it must bring Him when we as His children just give Him a spontaneous tangible expression of our love for Him. Not because we are commanded too. Not because we should. Although we do worship Him for Who He is no matter what our feelings are. But just because our hearts are so full of love for Him that we just have to somehow let it out.
Whether it be a spontaneous prayer, or bursting forth in a little chorus or hymn, or just words of thankfulness on a spur of the moment, bringing forth that expression of love towards God, brings that Father God/you His child revelation into your everyday. It takes it out of the God reaching down to us on earth realm, into a tangible, real, two way love relationship. God loving you and now you responding back to your heavenly Father. There is nothing quite like it.
So what do you think? Is it too much of a stretch to think that the Father heart of God can be blessed by spontaneous expressions of love from His children? Why or why not? If you have done this what are some of the ways you’ve expressed love to God spontaneously?

I think I would have to agree that it blesses the Father to receive expressions of love from us. His word says in several verses about how He delights in us and how he loves us more than we love our own children. So, yes I believe it is true. Some of the best ways I think I can express love to my Father in heaven is by obeying his word even when I don’t want to. I also love singing praises to Him, even making up my own songs and prayers in secret for only His ears.
I got one of those spontaneous kisses and “thanks, Mom” the other day and it completely warmed my heart. And I agree that God delights in our praise and I’m sure that, like we as earthly parents do, He loves those spontaneous offerings of thanks and love.
It wasn’t until having my son (now 18 months) that I started getting glimpses of what it means to be called children of God. I always saw it as meaning he was responsible for us, not understanding the core depth of emotion that a parent has for a child. There’s no way that God would put something that wonderful within us and not have that same feeling going on within Himself!!
I agree with Lundie in that I have been taken to a deeper level of understanding with my relationship with God since having my children. Just like when you are preparing for your 1st baby during pregnancy and cannot truly comprehend what it will be like to be a parent and love this child unconditionally…now I have a deeper sense of what God feels for me as His child. I find myself praising him and thanking Him for my beautiful boys all the time. We just had our 2nd son dedicated this past Sunday and it was an expression of praise and commitment to God as He has entrusted us to raise this child unto Him.
Gotta LOVE those spontaneous gifts of love! Thanks for the reminder to be giving them to God too!!!
When I became a parent, it completely changed the way I saw God, and this post is one reflection of a major change.
The Bible tells us that he delights in his children, he rejoices in them. I absolutely think that he loves those spontaneous gifts of love!
