Who Knows You Best?

Posted By Jennifer

O LORD, you have searched me
and you know me.

You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.

You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue
you know it completely, O LORD.

Psalm 139: 1-4

God knows absolutely everything about you. Does this fill you with warmth, like a blanket wrapped around your shoulders on a cold winter’s night? Or perhaps it makes you feel bare and cold, with absolutely nowhere to hide. Let me assure you that it’s a good thing:

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.

I John 3:1, 4:9,16

He loves you that much, in spite of the fact that nothing within us is hidden from Him. Hopefully you have a person or two in your life who can help you understand this idea of complete unconditional love, perhaps a husband or a sister or a best friend. They have probably seen you at your best and at your worst, through temper flare-ups and bad missteps, and yet they are steadfast.

In fact, the person who really knows us, and also shares our faith, can often help us to overcome some of those less desirable aspects of our personalities. A look from my husband can cut off a phone conversation with a friend that is heading in the wrong direction. An inquiring email from a friend about a problem that’s been an ongoing struggle can strengthen my resolve to handle it head-on.

However, even your closest friend does not truly know everything about you. They don’t know the hurtful thoughts that you have, they don’t know of that secret sin or skeleton in your closet. God does, and He still loves you. David, the Psalmist, turns to the One who knows him best and asks Him to lead him into positive change:

Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139:23-24

Since you can’t hide anything from God, what struggle should you bring before Him in order to try to conquer it? Is there a person whom you can trust to help you be accountable in this area as well?
