Charting My Path To Physical and Spiritual Fitness

Posted By Health Moderator

It’s a new year and a time when many people add fitness goals to their resolution list. For some it is the first time that fitness is being added to their list. For others this year could mark the 10th year that they are adding it to their list. For me, this is the tenth year. After having my son (second child) 10 years ago, I began to gain weight. Many things
factored into my weight gain: Getting our first car as a married couple, less walking, staying home more often because of having the baby, and just a disregard towards the fact that my body began changing with age and every pregnancy - four in all. Mind you, I didn’t suddenly wake up 10 years later to find that I was almost 90 lbs. over my newlywed days, but it has been an
ever increasing battle for the last six years since having my last child. My weight has yo-yo’d between 200 and 250, I’ve gone on diets, I’ve done 3-day 60-mile walks, I’ve ridden my bike to church (5 miles from my home), and I’ve even walked to work (10 miles from my home).

As I look back over the last six years I can also see how I’ve struggled in my relationship with God and with my husband. All of this tied together has been a lesson plan for disaster. God willing, I am determined that this year will be the year that I not only lose the weight, but I also work my way to becoming spiritually and physically fit.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1

The key words in this scripture are “in view of God’s mercy . .” If I am physically able to stay fit, then why don’t I? If I am able to strengthen my relationship with God, then why don’t I? I am determined to search God’s scriptures this year as I chart my path to a renewed relationship with God and a fresh look at becoming healthy. Won’t you join me?
