Sunday afternoon, the weatherman told us that we just might get an inch or two of snow overnight. Like any other eight-year-old, my son was hoping that forecast would translate into at least a 2-hour delay. He greeted me Monday morning with, “Any delay?” I had to break the news to him that it was school-as-usual, no delays. Another week of learning was about to begin.
When I hear the word “beginning,” I most often think of it in a positive light. A beginning is a chance to start over, an opportunity to make better decisions this time around, a fresh start. But the truth is, not all beginnings are pleasant. My son would be the first to tell you that the beginning of the school week is not something he looks forward to.
Some beginnings are rife with uncertainty. Starting a new job, beginning a new season of life, moving to a new neighborhood. There may be some excitement involved, but we’re often also nervous, unsure, or even frightened.
Still other beginnings are deeply sorrowful, laced with pain. I’m reminded of a dear friend whose third child was stillborn. They went home from the hospital facing a new beginning: trying to adjust the thought of life without their precious daughter whose birth they had long anticipated. I also reflect on when my father passed away. The funeral preparations went by in a blur, but afterward, we woke up to a new beginning - starting our lives without this man who meant the world to us.
When beginnings are uncertain or downright painful, we need, more than anything else, to cling to the One who loves us enough to take every step of the journey with us. No matter where the road of our new beginning leads, we can be assured that we aren’t traveling alone. And not only does the Lord walk with us, He is guiding and upholding us all the way.
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,Even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.- Psalm 139:8-10
Dear Father, I am so thankful for the exciting beginnings that are full of hope and promise. But I’ve learned that not every beginning is like that. Please help me to lean on you when I’m facing an uncertain or painful beginning. Thank you for always being there, for always holding me fast. Amen.
For discussion: How have you experienced God’s sustenance during a difficult beginning?

Oh how true Katrina! Those can be so painful. What a comfort it is to have the Lord with us during those times.
Most of the beginnings I’ve experienced may have been a little frightening, but there was also a mix of excitement to distract me. The beginnings that you described leave one no choice but to cling to Him whose plan is best. The scripture you chose is a perfect choice of something to hold to.
that verse has gotten me through a lot of hard times in my life. Thanks for the wonderful post!
Beautiful verse, Katrina. And so true not all beginnings are joyous. They can be downright scarey. So comforting to know that the Lord’s hand will hold me fast.
