Christmas Giveaway 2013: Topps Baseball and Football Cards

Michelle of Honest & Truly!, a 5 Minutes for Mom contributor, shares her thoughts on Topps Baseball and Football cards in this sponsored post.  She was compensated for this article.

Growing up, I was a huge sports fan. I would listen to the Twins baseball games on my radio with the volume turned low after bedtime so no one knew I was still awake. I still have the lineup of the 1987 World Series Champions memorized. Not surprisingly, I was also a sports card collector. When we moved, I discovered that I still have them, and I treasure the memories associated with them. It’s time for a new generation of sports fans to collect cards, and the Topps Baseball and Football cards are a world away from the ones I bought in packs too many years ago to count.

Half the fun was buying the baseball trading card packs (now you can buy chrome or platinum value packs for $9.99 that include three to four packs of trading cards, plus other bonuses) and seeing if your favorite players were in them. Trying to collect full teams and all the players in the major leagues for a given year was fun – and interactive. When you end up with a duplicate, chances are that your friend down the street – or now, your buyer online – doesn’t have that card and is willing to trade with you.  Figuring out who you want and what the relative values of the cards is a blast.

And it isn’t just the traditional baseball cards you hear about. Topps also offers football trading cards that allow you to collect and trade your favorite players and teams. The cards come in various pack sizes, including annual complete sets.  The 2013 Topps football complete set is $49.99, for example that includes all 440 base cards plus a 5 card pack of rookie variations cards.

Collecting and trading cards is a great way for kids to feel connected to the pros they see on tv each week. Sitting down with multiple generations to pore through the cards to determine which one is missing and then buying “just one more” pack in the hopes that your player is in there is a memory you’ll always remember. It’s the simple things in life that tie us together and draw out our passions just a little bit more.

i used to have thousands of baseball cards as a kid. no idea what happened to them all. This would be a great way to get my son started.

My son used to collect the bubble gum packs when young…so nice for Santa and Easter bunny to gift him. But OH, how awesome to have the complete sets. Good thing I have a sweet lilttle 6 year old grandson who would love to start collecting with his daddy now. I know it would be a great bonding time for them!
