Children are born passionate artists, but how do we help them keep their passion alive and grow as creative individuals throughout their adolescent years?
As a mom of two little girls who still love to color and draw, I worry if they will get enough “art” in their education to keep them inspired. Art classes at school are limited or nonexistent and I personally have no art abilities or skills to pass on to them.
While I can teach them to read, write, add and subtract, I cannot teach them to draw. I can barely draw a stick person.
I remember as a child gradually realizing I wasn’t very good at drawing and becoming scared to try. When we had the choice of whether or not to take art in school at age 13, I didn’t take the class because I believed I wasn’t artistic and I was scared to get a bad grade.
I wonder if I had been given some art lessons when I was in that important age range of 6 to 12, if I might have learned enough to gain some confidence to keep trying to draw and enjoy art. Instead, I got frustrated that I didn’t know how to draw and gave up. I labeled myself as unartistic and never again tried to create art.
I am so thrilled to have discovered Thrive Online Art Classes for Kids.
Through the video art classes, kids learn the basics of how to draw and they have the opportunity to come up with their own ideas. These fun lessons teach kids to innovate and create.

At Six Flags there was an art booth where they painted the kids hands with paint to make a handprint and then made them into animals. That was the start of the finger painting at our house. Now I buy them paints to use on old plans but none are as nice as the one that they did at Six Flags.

I think my 9 year old son could really benefit from this program! He loves to draw but I am so disappointed with the lack of art in his school and can’t find a decent extracurricular program in our area. These lessons look amazing!
Stacy Uncorked says
My 10 year old is a phenomenal artist – this would be so perfect to keep those fires burning! My favorite picture she drew me so far is the impromptu sketch for Mother’s Day – she drew me as a mommy dragon with four arms, and her as my dragon child. 🙂
Shari says
I love the spontaneous art like a self portrait collage she made last summer that looks so much like her.

My kids are half chinese but my son is quite a bit darker than my daughter. . . when ever she draws them she colours herself peach and me peach, and my husband and my son dark brown. . . it is too cute!

My son just made a Mother’s Day card for me that had several different kinds of insects on it. I was impressed that he used the right colors and the details he added of each type of insect. He’s only 6, but I’ve really seen his art work improve over the last year. He would love an art class.
Mary Happymommy says
My 8 year old drew a picture of our poodle and it is amazing! He’s very much into art and would love to follow a program (I have no artistic talent to speak of to help him out).

Mary Hampton says
The Mother’s Day card my 10 year old made me this year is really cute. It’s supposed to be an issue of TIME Magazine. There’s a “picture” of me on the cover, along with headlines of things important to him. Inside he wrote a summary of his last week in baseball along with a drawing of a scene from a game. I love it because it’s a little snapshot of his life right now. It’s a keeper for sure.
I love the idea of these classes. We just moved; our previous school had a credentialed art teacher and everyone got art class once a week (in addition to whatever their class might do). My son would say that Art was his favorite class before we moved; our new school system doesn’t offer art like that, and I miss it on their behalf. Maybe these online classes would be a substitute that they’d enjoy.
Sonya Davis says
My 9 year old daughter would love art classes, she has Tourette’s Syndrome and drawing is one of the things that helps with her tics, she is very creative and loves art!
Sonya Davis says
Her favorite thing to draw is flowers.
beth cole says
My daughter would die if I won this. She made me a picture of our dog, Willie, who passed away last year.
Vague says
Mr. 10 is so frustrated with art. I can only draw objects if I can see a picture of them so I feel like an inadequate teacher. If I win the giveaway, I’m hoping this will help everybody’s frustrations.
