I was very far from home when I was a college student. I was a freshman at a college in PA, while my family was back in the UK. Going home to England for Thanksgiving or Spring Break was not an option. So my parents arranged for me to spend time with family friends in New Jersey.
During the week I was visiting, I spent a day with a girl I had known when my family lived in New Jersey when I was in elementary school. Years had passed since I had seen my friend, so I knew her but didn’t really know her if you know what I mean. After shopping and stopping for pizza, she began to look at her watch. She asked me if there was anywhere else I wanted to go. I picked up that she was willing to drive me around, but really wanted to go back to her parents’ house, so we did.
Once we arrived at her house, she wasted no time turning on the TV. I was puzzled…why would she need to rush home to turn on the TV at exactly 3 p.m. on a Wednesday? For the next hour she was glued to General Hospital. You see this was the 80s…before DVRs, Netflix, and streaming of TV shows. She probably didn’t trust her VCR to record the show.
I didn’t watch another soap opera until about five or so years later when my new husband insisted that we watch General Hospital while we ate dinner each night. Though I was never then and am not now a fan of soap operas, there is something comforting about watching a cast of familiar characters going through trials and tribulations…even if some are rather far fetched!
You get sucked in to the storylines. You want - you have to know - how the storyline will end. The plot, no matter how ridiculous and contrived, is a kind escape from your everyday humdrum life. And I am not even going to tell you how long I have been watching soap operas with my husband… even if I am only watching them because the TV is on and he is the one watching!
No doubt you have heard of As the World Turns, but have you heard of As the Pocket Turns? Lean Pockets has a new promotion tied in with its Lean Pocket brand sandwiches. Lean Pockets debuted a new interactive digital soap opera on YouTube, As the Pocket Turns (see video above). Billed as a soap opera that is “turning up the heat on New Year’s Resolutions”, viewers can choose the ending to this campy soap opera by clicking on the face of one of the story’s characters. Who will you choose?
But, while the soap opera is light hearted, there’s heft behind it as Lean Pockets commissioned a survey of 1,000 men and women to ask if they made resolutions at the start of the new year, whether they keep their resolutions, and what they wanted to resolve or improve most in 2013. As Roz O’Hearn of Nestlé USA states: “Everyone loves making a fresh start and better choices in the New Year. Lean Pockets is a great choice for food that fits with a healthy lifestyle. No matter the goal, we wish everyone success in keeping their resolutions.”
Survey findings showed that the majority of respondents (62 percent) resolved to exercise more and more than half (59 percent) intend to eat better in the New Year. I was shocked to find that both men and women have little faith that they will keep their New Year’s Resolutions for good, as only seven percent (7%) of women believed they could stick to their goals, versus just five percent (5%) of men.
