When I was a kid, there was one special day at school that I made sure I was there — pizza day! Do you remember those delicious, round, little pizzas? Oh my stars! Pizza day was always my favorite. I would pile my lunch plate high with Fiestada pizza, a salad, apples, a cookie, and of course my milk. It was a match made in heaven!
Teaching our kids to make important choices about their lunches is a job that sometimes can be hard, because kids tend to choose the foods that are not the healthiest choice for them. The schools are doing their part by providing some healthier alternatives and it’s our job as parents to talk to them about those choices and how to turn their least favorite lunch foods into their favorite lunch foods. Here are a couple of quick ideas that you can use.
- Go over the lunch calendar each night: One thing that my kids and I used to do is go over all their choices for lunch the next day. This helped them to kind of create a mini menu in their head of what they wanted to eat.
- Choose vibrant colored foods: Make it a game for your child and have them create a “color wheel” of sorts on their plate and then vote on which one was their favorite.
How to Choose Healthy Foods Your Kids Will Love
The School Nutrition Association is hosting a ‘Healthy Lunches Kids Love‘ photo contest on Facebook. It’s really easy to enter. All you have to do is submit a snapshot and brief description of your kids’ lunch favorites containing color fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy.
Entries will be judged on overall balance of nutrition, kid appeal, creativity and ease of meal preparation. The winning lunch inspirations and recipes will be shared with parents and schools across the country.
