Something simply wonderful has happened to me. I’ve been invited to visit the set and interview the talent for the new Nicholas Sparks movie Safe Haven. 5 Minutes for Mom needed someone to cover the visit and I happen to live near the small North Carolina town where the movie is filming. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
Safe Haven is the latest Nicholas Sparks book to be turned into a movie. Seven of his previous novels have been made into movies. (The most recent, The Lucky One, will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on August 28, 2012.)
Safe Haven is set in the town of Southport and focuses on Katie (played in the move by Julianne Hough), a mysterious stranger who is trying to start over, and Alex (played by Josh Duhamel), a recent widower trying to learn how to live in his new reality. Cobie Smulders also stars as the enigmatic Jo.
I’ll be joining a group of other bloggers to visit the set, have a tour with Nicholas Sparks, a roundtable interview with Sparks, and hopefully interviews with some of the cast. (I am having to resist adding multiple exclamation points because I am so excited!!!) I have had several friends and family volunteer to be my “assistant” on the set visit. Sadly, they discourage bloggers from bringing an entourage.
As with all movies inspired by books, I highly recommend reading the book before seeing the movie. Safe Haven is a little more suspenseful than the usual Nicholas Sparks novel; I had a hard time putting it down, so I finished it in a day and a half! You have until February 8, 2013, the current release date, to finish the book.

In the meantime, you can follow our adventure on August 8th by watching the hashtag, #safehaventrip on Twitter. I will be posting about the interviews and set closer to the release of the movie.
Disclosure: My travel and accommodations were provided for this visit to the Safe Haven movie set. No other compensation was received. All opinions expressed are honest and my own.
