When the topic of Google+ comes up, there is often a collective and audible sigh. “One more thing. And we can’t take anymore!!!”
The worst part is — this is Google we are talking about! We can’t just ignore them, not if we know what is good for us. The fact is, Google makes the rules and changes the rules. And if we don’t play the game their way, we are going to lose traffic.
So, I am frustrated. I don’t want to embrace Google+. I don’t want another place where I have to prove my influence and grow my network. I am too busy as it is!
But, as I said, I don’t get to make the rules. We all made Google this powerful. (Remember when it was only us online savvy people that used Google for search?) Now, they rule us. And we might as well make the best of it.
Recently, I talked to Srinivas Rao, founder of BlogCastFM.com, about how he was incorporating Google+ into his online strategy to promote his blog and free podcast. I found his positivity about Google+ encouraging.
MC: How are you using Google+ to grow and promote your blog and podcast?
Srinivas: I’m using Google+ to run a listener focus group for the people who listen to my podcast. I was looking for a way to get an in-depth understanding of the user experience so I invited 10 of my podcast listeners to participate in the group in exchange for 30 minutes of free consulting time. I’ve had an extensive discussion with all the participants over the course of the last 7 days. I’m also making it a point to share content on Google+ that I’ve shared on Facebook and twitter.
MC: What advantages have you found using Google+ versus Facebook?
