I thought it was hard to keep my house organized when my kids were little and underfoot all day long.
Somehow I believed all those years that once my kids went back to school, I’d have a perfectly clean and organized house. When I was imagining those dreams of a clean and quiet house, being a work-at-home mom was not in the picture.
Now that I have an office upstairs and work hours are during the school day and when the kids are in bed, I end up not leaving much time left over for taking care of my house.
Although this cabinet in my kitchen might not look terrible upon first glance (then again, it MIGHT to you…) it is indicative of the disarray of the rest of my house. Usually chaos like this leaves me overwhelmed and I don’t know where to start. This week, I started with this kitchen cabinet.
Here’s the problem: Half of the time either the matching lid and container are not to be found OR the lids come crashing down on my head. Neither is a very enjoyable option. The plastic containers end up spilling over to the glassware shelves, which makes it harder to get those out when I decide I actually want to cook…
My 10 year old son and I tackled the cabinet together. He matched up all of the containers with lids and I then matched up similar-shaped containers to stack them up. Round lids went in one large container and square/rectangle lids went in another.
But best of all….the rest of the mismatched plastic ware ended up in the garbage, long over-due.
Our tackle wasn’t anything new or brilliant, but it was a good, refreshing reminder to me this week.
When I look at the whole house, I get overwhelmed.
When I tackle a little spot at a time, I feel refreshed, accomplished, and ready to do more.
